Posts: 271 | Fishermen really need to start holding fish for pictures close to their bodies... We all know those aren't 36" smallies but with arms extended all the way out there is no way to judge true size. I'm sure they're quite impressive but, Just sayin' Jaimy

I'm sure they're quite impressive but, Just sayin' Jaimy A lot of people don't hold fish out just to make them look bigger. In my opinion, the pictures simply turn out better when you hold them a certain way. Plus, these guys are not even holding the fish out that far. I can probably guess the size of every one of these Smallies and be within' an inch. Very cool pictures... and very, very nice fish! Thanks for sharing Steve and Jay!

Posts: 1663 | It's sometimes the photographer asking them to hold them out farther. It really doesn't matter as long as the fish were released unharmed. I do agree that holding them closer would give a more realistic idea of the fishes size. But, it's just a picture.

Posts: 176 | These are great fish! What a great fishery. I don't think those are bad photo styles at all, in fact I think you can see the details on how well these fish look, you can easily see the fisherman's fingers on the fish, if the distance makes you think that's a 36" Smallie you must think they have 4" wide fingers as well.

Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | that area of the state i would argue is the best freshwater fishing in the US ... from walleyes, muskies, smallies, salmon, trout etc... absolutely love spending our week of vacation in Door County. so many games to play within a short distance. this tournament is just plain ridiculous for the quantity of enormous smallies caught!! great coverage guys!!! Not addressing the images on this thread he doesn't, the images above don't have anyone holding out the fish any further than a bent elbow. Jason Sloan took the pictures, and said flatly that anyone thinking that is wrong. The average fish weighed in was 4.2 pounds, and it took almost a 5 pound average to make the up ten. The big one above if it's the largest fish of the event was 8.78 pounds. Enough of the criticism of every image of a good fish, THAT is why you see so few big fish pictures on the board.

Very impressive fish. I wonder how old a smallmouth has to live to be to get to 8#? Count me as another one who enjoyed the photos.

Posts: 271 | The second pic has the fish starting at almost the top of his hat with the tail extending past his waist almost to his knee... not an accurate depiction of size by any means. Wasn't trying to offend anyone, huge fish of course. Jaimy

Posts: 1023 | Thanks for posting, Steve. I head up to my Door County Cottage in a week to chase those things. Can't wait. While I love Vilas County, there is also some pretty special fishing to be had in Door County. And...there's nothing the missus loves more (including me) than reeling in smallies like that! Jaimy So your photo analysis leads you to believe it’s not an accurate depiction of the size of the fish, but you conclude it is “ huge fish of course...” ?
