Wisconsin walleye study may reveal more data indicating factors other than muskies as reasons for declining walleyes:

Declining Walleye population is due to overfishing by Humans 95% of the time.
There's your Scientific Study results.

We will see what happens with Lake Minocqua/Lake Tomahawk where there is a five year ban on walleye taking. However, there has been a big increase in bass on those waters.
The chain where I live had a big decline in walleyes that started after the drought years of 2004 to 2010. The chain, like a lot of flowages in N. WI is a #*^@ed up river. My guess is that the walleyes spawned in the up stream marshes, just as the walleyes from Lake Winnebago do, but the marshes were basically dry for three years or more, with only the streams running through having water. When the Winnebago/Wolf River system hits a very dry spell, they have poor year crops.

The last 10 years or so have been abnormally warm. Several years of drought, exploding populations of LMB... Add in angler harvest and tribal harvest, and it's easy to see why there has been a significant decline. Unfortunately, its far easier to ignore reality and just blame the muskies for eating them all.

What they said.
Walleye recruitment has previously been linked to high water, and moderate temperatures--and we had several years of higher than average temps at spawning in the last two decades, as well as some droughts in WI. Factor in high harvest, some fry predation by increasing SMB and LMB, and competition for food source with SMB which partly overlap in niche, it's not a shock.

Annual average temp graph (above/below normal)--vast majority of years from 1986-present above normal.

Average precip graph (above/below normal)--mostly above average but still fairly frequent drought years, especially between 2002-2013

Bass get released, walleye get battered and fried. Even with excellent recruitment walleye would be at a disadvantage

They (Walleye) also are LESS Work for LAZY Angler's to catch than other Species unless you like to eat sunys or Pumpkins..
Does anybody that fishes Great Walleye Lakes (Vermilion) actually believe that Muskies are destroying the Walleye population ?
I do have a FEW Knuckle head friends that think muskies are eating the Walleye's while they take 20-30 at a time and they brag that they don't have enough room in their freezer for any more... With some N .Mn. angler ,the Law means nothing... It's just a Suggestion.

Bing Bing thats it and unfortunately I think old age is our only friend on this one. A few knuckle heads in the UP still insist on spearing musky and a keeper is anything over 30. Then at the same time keep however many eyes they see fit, go out in the am take 15-20 of all sizes. Go back out rinse repeat

it look like it's in the human nature to condemned everything except the real problem which is human and HIS pollution, poaching, etc.it's a lot more easy to target musky or alligator gar when gamefish of all kind decline , instead of looking the face of the enemy in the mirror.i recently find a doc that was talking about dnr that have start to reintroduce gatorgar at almost all the place where it have been eradicated during the 60's ,they were sure bass and walleye decline was their fault, but this time the reintroduction is just because they supposed it will help for the asian carp overpopulation lol
