Location: Hayward, Wisconsin | LOUIE SPRAY AND THE MALO MUSKIE
Here is more on the supposed 70-pound 4-ounce Malo Muskie, claimed to have been caught from Middle Eau Claire Lake near Barnes, Wisconsin, just northwest of Hayward on June 6, 1954, by Robert Malo from Port Arthur, Ontario.
This newest information, just learned Tuesday, February 20, 2018, from an annotated interview done over 30 years ago with Paul Petit of Winter, Wisconsin, one of the key players at the time, by a source who wishes to remain anonymous:
Petit stated that “…they bought the fish from Thayer”, and that “…it was taken from the Flowage during the winter time.”
He further stated that “…We built a freezer…welded it together at (a local auto body garage in Winter, Wisconsin), put the fish in the freezer box, filled it with water and froze it that way.”
“Later, to screw with Louie (Spray), we just put the fish in his freezer at his Rice Lake (Wisconsin) tavern after we got him drunk and he went to bed. He (Louie) found it in his freezer the next morning and later gave the fish to Hank (Henry) Baroo.”
“Louie didn’t want this fish as he was still getting too much heat from his 1949 record fish, plus this fish was under 53-inches, but it did have a huge girth.”
“The actual weight of this fish was 56-pounds; full of spawn. We put a 5-pound northern pike in this fish, along with a bunch of ground-up fish to get this fish up to a record weight.”

FOR CLAIRIFICATION:
“Thayer” was a local tribal member.
The “flowage” was the Chippewa Flowage at Hayward, Wisconsin.
The fish was frozen in water to prevent freezer burn.
Petit wanted to “…screw with Louie…” (Spray) because Petit was still mad at Louie for not paying him for providing Louie with his 1939 ‘world record’ muskie, claimed to weigh 59-pounds 8-ounces, when Louie still lived in Hayward, Wisconsin where he owned another tavern at the time.
"...Spray later gave the fish to Hank Baroo.” Spray owed Baroo for some construction work he had done for him. Note: Baroo, it was recently learned, was a disgraced and corrupt cop from Detroit, Michigan, who was sentenced from “20 to 40 years” for his part, as was learned from “The Master Detective” October 1931, magazine story “Detroit’s Astonishing Hospital Hold-Ups”.
“Louie didn’t want this fish…”. The ‘heat’ Louie was getting was from his supposed 3rd world class ‘record’ muskie he had claimed he caught from the Chippewa Flowage in 1949 that supposedly weighed 69-pounds 11-ounces. It is believed that ‘Thayer’ or ‘Yankee Joe’ provided Louie with that fish…the Petit brothers were involved in providing Louie with his claimed 1939 and 1940 ‘record’ muskies (the 1940 fish was claimed to weigh 61-pounds 13-ounces). These last two claims have been proven scientifically to be nowhere as large as claimed in either length or girth and therefore could not possibly have weighed what was claimed. The 1939 fish was never scientifically reviewed because there is no known photograph in existence with Louie holding it!
“…this fish was under 53-inches…”. The fish was 52 1/2-inches long fork length and 55-inches long total length.
“…but it did have a huge girth.” The girth was 32-inches and the fish was massive throughout.
NOTE: So, there you have yet more information on one of the many (5) bogus world record muskie claims to come from the Hayward, Wisconsin area waters (3 by Spray, one by Cal Johnson and Malo). The Malo muskie never attained record status, as Field & Stream magazine, record keeper at the time, refused to certify it. larry can do everything he want,i can't talk for the others but im personally really happy of what he did.one of the things i hated the most is lies and larry contribute to destroy them one by one .i guess someone from igfa have some obscure reason to maintain that obvious bs spray's ''record'' in place. i would like to know larry's point of view about it? |

Location: Elk Grove Village, IL & Phillips, WI | IGFA doesn't recognize the Spray fish. The Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward does (for obvious reasons). IGFA lists Cal Johnson's which is also very questionable! |

Location: 31 | Nothing wrong with taking pictures and/or making them public if legitimate… for instance nobody doubted the dimensions of the modern-day release record. The only way it could be considered questionable if you believe the July caught Johnson WR muskie had a girth of 33 ½”.

perfect after thousands pics of all size,colours we have seen enough.you must still believe in santaclauss if you think the supposed wr from the 40's are legit.or maybe you are just sure that is just true because igfa can't be wrong right?

| It is a pity that some people still believe in those fake Wisconsin records. I can't believe the IGFA and the Hall both still refuse to delist those fish. I quit both organizations when they threw out the Lawton fish but kept Spray's and Johnson's. In my opinion either the O'Brian or Barefoot muskie should be the record. A quick look at the Minnesota tiger caught a few years back it had a huge girth and it wasn't even thirty inches so there is no way the Spray or Johnson fish were close to 30 inches. Would like to fish Green Bay or Lake View Desert but won't until the hall throws out the Wisconsin fish, which looks like it will never happen. |

It would be really cool to know just how big they were.
Even though they may not have been as big as they claimed... they were indeed some of the largest Muskies ever caught. |

It's a shame people have potentially lied about the size of the fish they caught in Wisconsin...
It would be really cool to know just how big they were.
Even though they may not have been as big as they claimed... they were indeed some of the largest Muskies ever caught.
Actually, without doctoring that occurred, they were good fish, but by today's proven measuring standard, not exceptional. |
