I will be starting a new position at Loyola university this spring but don't know the area very well. Any advice on safe places to live near Loyola, I'm open for an hour commute to live in a better place. Areas near fishing are a plus as is being near the big lake but not a deal breaker as I'm close wnough to GB for weekend musky benders.
thanks for any info!

West of 294 is a good bet, it really depends on how mucb you make and what you want in a place to live.

Not a lot to like in NE Illinois, unless you like high taxes, overcrowding, and crime. Welcome to the suck.

Illinois has a flat income tax, one of only 3 or so states that do so if you are rich, you are good.

Fox Lake would be much more than an hour away.

Cinci, don't worry it would not benefit you and you missed the point

Fox Lake is a nice area. It's a zoo on weekends, but it's got that small town WI feel. If you're at the North Shore campus, though, that's a commute you might not want.

If you're a city type, I'd look at Evanston. If you're stupid-rich, Kenilworth is nice. Not far west of the city you have Hindsale, Clarendon Hills, Elmhurst, Oak Brook... Great schools, no crime to speak of.

Drive 20 min West towards the city, and you're into some West Side neighborhoods where I'd be afraid to stop at a red light.

Here's something else to consider:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Illinois_locations_by_per_capi...

At the bottom of the page there's a list of cities ranked by per capita income. Pretty safe bet that the higher you go on that list the better off you're going to be. I'd try to stay in the top 250 if you can.

Personally I like the northwest suburbs around Chicago. Des Plaines was a great place for me growing up and my wife and I moved back after college and are very happy there. A nice, quiet suburban town where the properties aren't outrageous and it's very safe with good schools. Places like Des Plaines, Mount Prospect, Arlington Heights, etc. all have relatively easy access to the Metra and CTA, so getting to Chicago isn't that bad. As far as fishing is concerned, it's about 50 minutes for me to get to the Fox Chain to launch, which I don't consider too bad. Busse Woods is close and not a terrible place to fish, especially if you have an electric motor only or a kayak.

I went to school at Loyola 2005-2010, so know the area pretty well and occasionally return for special events, alumni stuff, and basketball games. A lot has changed since then.

Rogers Park is the most affordable and up-and-coming neighborhood in Chicago. Some nice actual houses, and super close to lakefront..... but is and has always been a crime-ridden dump that attracts all walks of life. And within blocks from campus it actually is the 'hood. If you do want to stay in Rogers Park, do not go anywhere west of Sheridan. East of Sheridan is and has always been safest and trouble free.

For your quick commuting purposes, look north towards Evanston, NW out in Skokie, or south in Lincoln Park and Lakeview. Easy commutes by train. I especially recommend East Lakeview, as you are within nearby walking distance to Montrose and Belmont Harbors. I used to fish them quite often every spring and fall for bass.... and did so on days I felt like driving to campus from the west suburbs. Get your fishing fix conveniently right there. And the sights can be breathtaking on warm sunny weekends if you know what I mean.

Otherwise you won't find much fishing opportunity in west suburbs unless you are into river fishing. At that rate it will put you anywhere within an hour/90 mins away from school which can become a pain in the butt.

Thanks again for the help. I am thinking we will end up in NE subs. I
I have a couple kayaks that will be coming with us. If anyone want to get out to fish this summer let me know, I won't have a boat down there but will have access to one on GB and would be happy to trade info on the bay of GB (grew up near sturgeon bay) or STClair for fishing trips!

Busse woods is near schaumburg and arlington heights and good kayak water. They stock muskies in it as well.

My pay in Illinois is something that offsets taxes, crime, and crowding.Having no money would suck.

No, it’s just really THAT bad there.

I read these articles allegedly stating there are worse states to live in. Call me skeptical on that.

Would I rather live closer to trophy muskie fishing? Yes. But my wife won't have it since our children and grandchildren all live in the area. Being retired, I get in plenty of muskie fishing. There are a lot of people in Illinois - some good, some bad...just like anywhere else. I couldn't live in Chicago, but the outer 'burbs are fine.

What is there not to like about Illinois? Relatively, centrally located in the Muskie range, great Muskie fishing in state with lakes and rivers of all types, good weather for the most part... I like it. You can easily avoid the bad - which exist just about anywhere. Used to live in and visit Chicago regularly. As long as you don't try and rob somebody's house... you probably won't get shot.

There are no NE suburbs. NE of the city is the lake....

Get with it kid!

Sorry. I live in the NW suburbs (Arlington Heights. Great place, low crime, good schools)
