We are considering a trip to Cave Run in March but are wondering what type of trip we
could expect then? Realistic expectations for fishing quality? We would probably stay
at Mountain Muskie Lodge and do their $695 special they advertise in Musky Hunter.
Thx for any info

March is one of my favorite times there. It can be the Best or the Worst, depending on the weather. I've seen 40 mph winds and 3-4 ft waves, snow, ice...I've also seen good days where it was just a bit chilly. Google "Rattle your way to spring success" and that should give you an idea of how to fish it. You can expect water levels at winter pool, which makes traversing some of the stump areas tricky and dangerous for lower units. Still, there's plenty of places to fish I recommend, if you go, getting one of Tony's guides for at least a day.
Muskies Inc is working on a tourney for it's Region 3 members for the 17-18, so lodging may be at a premium at the lodge but there is always (what Sponge Bob used to call) the dis-Comfort Inn at the I-64 Farmers exit.
I've got big fish there in early March, and big skunks, too. go if you can but beware of weather. m

Just curious, where do they fish for musky's in March? Our season in NY doesn't open until June, same in Ontario.

Some areas never close the season.

Kentucky's season never closes although most don't fish for them when the water temperature is really high. I've heard April is one of the best months to be down there.

I have done Feb and April had success in both months. More of a river bite in Feb. I love April because you can camp at Zilpo and the place is basically empty, weather usually isn't bad but they do have small cabins too. Just be aware that the campground is a good ways away from any gas stations or groceries.

I think a trip in March may be the ticket.
