Anyone use this reel for bigger blades ?
Anyone use this combo specifically?
Would this reel be too heavy for the st croix big nasty?

I have the Avet SX Raptor and have used it a bit for rubber in the past, but after i got my tranx 500HG or revo beast HS i rarely use it any more. For just straight retrieve large blades its awesome.

Basically If you just want to straight retrieve the baits it a great reel, the pull pause Technic is a bit more difficult, wo level wind, and the lack of an IAR bearing. Im not saying it is impossible, i just wouldn't do it with the alternatives out there.

I have used this combo specifically, for the past 3 or 4 years. (Not the Raptor model, but the regular JX 6/3 MC model - other than drag, specs you posted look the same.)

It has worked great for me, for big blades only. However, I wish I had an Avet model that was smaller and had a IPT of about about 35. The JX is big and heavy, and I personally find the IPT too high for my taste (maybe I'm just too old). I use it dramatically underspooled, pulling something like 33-36 IPT. This means that the low speed setting is useless to me. The way I use it, much of the reel's capabilities are wasted. That said, fully spooled it can make those 10s scream.

I would trade it for a single speed MXJ or SXJ.

I find casting easy but have heard and am convinced that the MC cast control is critical.

Hope that helps.

Yeah i was thinking about that 46ipt. It would either be dynamite or just too much, possibly too much to even keep the bait submerged lol. Also the 6:1 ratio. I know its a huge spool but if im purchasing this reel i want it to make retrieving even supermodels effortless. I currently use a 61 toro beast (6:1) for 10s. It works well at 34ipt but is a bit of a workout. Would i experience the same on this particular avet?

Super models is not going to be effortless, unless you have low IPT, or super long power handle. :P

But i will say that my SX not filled all the way to the top is my preferred reel for large blades, only reason it doesn't get mutch use is that i don't spend enough time with the large blade blades, and prefer the other reels on the rod, as i dont bring a designated rod for blades, if i did, it would be the SX raptor that was on that rod.

The JX set at the slow setting (22 IPT) makes pulling in #13 blades pretty much effortless. Slow moving though. Sending you a PM.

I think you would be better served with the Avet MXJ 5.8MC. Take a look at the G2 series, 20lbs max drag, 12lbs at strike, which should be more then enough drag to set the hook hard at half the price of the Raptor.

Still, if you really want the Raptor, they are excellent reels and worth buying if you want that extra drag.

But, stick with the MX sizes. There is a ton of cranking power in these reels.

Yeah now im looking at the mxj 6/4 raptor. Just hope the 6.3:1 ratio is powerful enough on this reel for the big blades

What are you referring to with "powerful enough" big blades and high IPT is never going to be easy, but with the long handle on the Avet reels, i wouldn't worry about being "under powered"

That would be a "user" power issue.

How powerful are you?

Not very powerful and very lazy, i dont like to work hard. so the easier it is to crank the better

In all honesty, if I were you I would just get a star drag conventional for casting lures.

You will have no problems cranking in the biggest buck tails you can find with an Avet MXJ or JX, regardless of gear ratio, but do you really want to spend your time working the lever on every cast?

You can't beat the Avets for bait fishing of any kind, but fishing lures with a lever drag will get really old really quick.

Just something to think about before you decide to pull that trigger.

After 20 minutes of use i never noticed the lever-drag operation again.

seems like guys either love or hate the lever drag. apparently lever drag shines on boat side hits, but doesn’t do so good in shallow cover. Only reason i can think it doesn’t do good in shallow cover is because the delay it takes to engage the reel causes your bait to sink into the weeds, snags etc.
