Location: Hayward, WI | Has anybody used a Tackle Industries XXH with 1 to 2 inches trimmed off the tip for Pounders? I got a tip on trimming 2 inches from the tip of those rods to turn them into great Pounder rods a while back.
I've been considering building a Thorne Predator xh for Pounders, but in reality I don't throw Pounders ALL that much, and maybe a 70 dollar blank would be a smarter option than the 260 dollar predator for the use it will get.
I've used the TI XXH for pounders and my main critique on it is how much the rod flexes when working the bait back to the boat. Would trimming 2 inches off give it enough extra power to not load up as much when ripping, and also have a side benefit of maybe a little more casting oomph too?

Location: Hayward, WI | Yes, I've handled that rod and it's heavier than I'm looking for. Searching for a balance of power while maintaining some flex. The Thorne Predator xh is about ideal but hoping to find something relatively comparable for less money.
I know, Predator is best but hoping to spend less than $400+ on a finished rod that won't get used daily. |

| The TI 9' XXH is great as is in my opinion. For the money anyways.

Location: Aurora | Off topic a little but worth a mention is my new favorite all-arounder.
It's a TI 9' XH, custom built out to 9'6" and it broke about 6" from the tip the first time out making it a 9 footer again but with 6" off the tip. Builder moved a couple guides, put a tip on it and gave it to me to try.
Not for pounders mind you but for mag dawgs on down to mini bucktails, it's killer.
To get a good snap on pounders, i'd much prefer ToothTamer's XXXXH 9 footer.

| I have a Thorne Bros XH that I can use for almost everything. It handles pounders great, but I also really like it for 9 and 10 blades as it doesn't flex as much in the 8. If you have the budget for a Thornes rod you will be much happier with that over a TI.
If you have too heavy of a rod it won't load properly and you will fatigue much quicker with heavy baits. |

Location: Hayward, WI | Thanks for your suggestions. For my uses, the TI XXH is a little too soft and slow for me as it loads up a lot when I rip Pounders, and I like to rip them at times. The TI XXXH is just too much of a broomstick for me and my preferences. Looking for something in between them.
I've used a Thorne Predator XH and I know it's ideal, but I don't throw Pounders ALL the time and not sure I can justify spending $400+ on a rod that doesn't get frequent use from me. I may have Keith at Pro Edge put something together for me. |

Sure, I understand they are pretty versatile as well, though I have a Big Nasty I extended to 9'4 that fills a whole lot of applications as well, so pretty much just need a Pounder rod at this point. It being versatile would just be a side benefit.
Point taken though and a Predator isn't out of the question, just looking for other options. |

I've never used one but I was under the impression they were a very similar blank to the TI blanks, and might be slower than I want. I could be wrong about that though? |

Not really. Maybe I should reconsider but when I used one years ago I recall it being more of a broomstick than I wanted and had a shorter handle. Maybe things have changed since then though. |
