Posts: 51 | HI Everyone Got my first sucker fish last night and it was awesome. Nice chunky 41.25". I was using an Abu ambassodor and couldn't really tell how much line I had out when I set the hook as it happened right at dark. Would like to buy a quality line counter reel for this application. Just wondering what all your experiences are with the Shimano Tekota, Diawa Sealine, and Okuma line counters. Is it worth spending up to get the shimano? Or do you think you could get away with a cabelas depth master reel for sucker fishing to save some coin and buy more suckers. Would love to hear anyone's opinion. Thank you.

Posts: 1516 | maybe he wants to know how much line he has out/down. I would go with the Shimano in the event you want to use it for trolling when not using it to sucker fish. Edited by Pepper 10/26/2017 9:26 AM

Posts: 410 Location: Wakefield, MI | I run Okuma because I use left hand crank. I've run the Okuma Magda pro's before with no issues, but have since upgraded to the Okuma Coldwaters. Have had zero issues, I fish right until freeze-up most years.

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | I've got many years on the Okuma Convector 20LC's and still going strong. One thing I would suggest, this goes for regular reels and non-sucker hooksets as well, set the drag to fight the fish and not locked down. Instead, use your thumb on the spool to stop the line from slipping on a hookset. This will save the anti-reverse as well as the pawl on the line guide. Edited by Will Schultz 10/26/2017 1:27 PM

Posts: 416 Location: Madtown, WI | I just spooled up my sucker reels with 100# power pro depth hunter line. Heck of a lot cheaper than buying line counter reels just for sucker fishing. You get high vis tick marks every 5' and it change color every 25'. Pretty easy to always tell how much line you have out, if you wanted to be really exact you could make marks on your rod with a china marker to line up the 5' marks with.

Posts: 20178 Location: oswego, il | If you already have a reel you can designate for sucker fishing the depth hunter line may be fine. If you do not you can get a decent line counter, diawa, okuma, penn 309 pick any model and have about the same or less money than a standard musky baitcaster with a clicker. The line counter can also double as a trolling reel. Edited by ToddM 10/27/2017 10:26 AM
