If you could only fish one month for muskie, which month would you choose?

I would pick September. The water starts to cool, big fish move shallow and like to eat topwater and blades... worst part of the month is going back to work after having all summer off...oh well, someone has to do it!

I picked September, but November is a very close second.

October for three reasons:
seems to have the most variety of patterns and conditions (i.e. fast baits still in play, topwater in play, live bait comes into play, and there are a few major fish concentrations that usually occur)
I believe it's my most productive month in terms of catch rate
No bugs. No heat. Very comfortable to just be on the water.

A professional angler said he catches over half his muskie in June alone, I was quite surprised by this.

June and Sept are usually my best months. I picked September in the poll as there are usually less people on the water. That alone makes it more enjoyable.

I will vote September. To me it seems like the odds are highest to catch a really big fish during that month where weather gets dicey and temps cool. Great time to catch big Pike too.

My favorite is late-October through November. Mostly for the same reasons that you all like September, but I believe my climate to be a bit behind you gentlemen from the North and Midwest (maybe). Water temps are still fluctuating from 72-75 as the day progresses. Going to be about two weeks before we get a good cool off. Late June-August, our lakes are boiling around 82-86, for the most part.

September by far as three of my biggest were caught then, all over 50", all on topwater and all wading.

I actually like March (I have caught some nice pre-spawn fatties then), but that is not a choice.

September and October! September is not great this year in Illinois but good in the past so depends on year! I like November that I don't worry about water turn over much and BIG fish time! Tom Gelb caught 48 and 51 pounds in November. He was alone row trolling for many days!

If I was limited to only fishing Muskie one month a year I probably pick July... I'd go find something else to "hunt" in the fall, my October and November the last 10 years is always tough decision whether to be in the boat or in a tree.

Hiya,

i would think this could vary a bit based on location within the US. Being in Minnesota, I would take September. As reasons stated above, there always seems to be a movement to shallow water when the water starts its main cool down. Everything for presentation can work at this time so variety is there.

June would be a very close second for me. In the years I can fish in june extensively, I would say the majority of my catches are at this time of year as well, but the fish usually run a touch smaller.

I like July,,water has usually lost its chill and muskies will fight and jump,,also much longer days and shorter nights.

I love the "you never know what you're gonna get" weather that October brings to NE WI. There's been days where we fished in shorts and insulated Gore-Tex with gloves the next day.
