I've fished my favorite lake for~ 15 years. It's ~8 miles by ~ 3/4 miles. I've come to learn some good spots and numerous baits-techniques that produce. Several people-friends that live-fish on the lake agree with me that since the recent cool-down fishing improved. However we all agree they still don't come easy. Well enough background.

A number of guys come off the water consistently (2 in particular) with stories of fantastic catch's (both: size and numbers). I've come to blow off these accounts. I wonder why fisherman lie - exaggerate?

I'm a liar not likely to tell you I got a fish. My soninlaw caught his first really good fish and was busting to tell someone . When we got to the dock and someone asked if we had any luck I said we didn't drown cant get any luckier than that. I have freespooled more than one fish while a boat passed

If some one I'll tell them most of the time catch is nothing. But if I see fish I'll tell them hope they catch them. I fish vermilion once a year for a week if I see fish tell people right where I seen them and what I was casting.

I usually see it with new individuals to the sport. I think a lot of it has to due with the level of difficulty this passion has at certain times and new guys get frustrated. They watch all the TV and YouTube vides and see all the posts on Facebook. Seems like and awesome sport and I can catch some huge fish.....BUT....it's not that simple. After a few years of trying and not being in the 1%, I think a lot of these same guys get frustrated and start to feel the pressure to be as good as everyone else, at least in their eyes. I've been doing this for 17 years and over the past 5 or so years I completely stopped posting pictures on Facebook and getting involved with the numbers rants online. To me, it's just not worth it and does nothing good for the sport to be arrogant, especially if you're lying about it.

What Hoolihan said.

There is power in lying. I think they like to see how people react, and muskie stories get people's attention. You can BS a lot of people, just not other dedicated muskie people. When you show a picture people ask one to three things: whered ya catch it? and How long did it take to land it? Did you keep it? They'll eat up any story you tell them. I do lie about the where quite often because the average person doesn't know muskie etiquette of don't ask where. I could spin a tale of the long battle, it dragging me around the lake, or say I got five fish today and people would believe it. It's all catch and release, so they'll never know the difference. It happens most in muskie fishing since the fish has some legend to it.
Why lie? Cause you can. Most guys have more character than that, some pretend they are the 1%.

Look in they're boat. If you don't see a bump board, walk away and ignore them.

The dead tell is the hands.

I second the above.
If their hands look destroyed, thumb calloused, and they can't straighten out the pinkie & ring finger on their palming hand.. they might be an honest ta goodness non-fibber.
Another automatic trust trait is if they're fishing out of an old crestliner.

I normally see them and normally say I had a good day looking at them but didn't get any... now, fishing in general, my buddy and I have had many "poor" days with other people saying they slayed them... well this year we entered a few tournaments and have won just under half, that is my proof that other people's great day is often still less than a "poor" day to us. But to be fair anyday on the water is better than a day at work.

So on the other hand, if I see the same boater a few days in the row and have no issues with there behavior I will probally tell them a piece to the puzzle and the truth about what I caught( if they want either). Or if I see some younger anglers who appear to be green and they are behaving well I'll tell them up to two pieces of the puzzle. Parts of the puzzle are bait, size of bait, color, speed, depth, location, timing

The lies Ive heard at the boat launch never seise to amaze me. Last fall with tackleaddict a guy tried to explain to us how he was in the boat with his dog and spotted a "easily 50" inch musky. He explained in detail how his dog then jumped in and grabbed the tail of the fish and they alligator rolled for a while. I pulled the BS card immediately.

I know many Walleye guys who would rather dump their wife than admit to getting skunked fishing. I'm sure there are some Muskie guys like that also. For me it doesn't matter. You catch them or you don't. Species doesn't matter.

I think it makes ppl feel like a big shot for a little while, telling grandiose stories of magnificent fish caught or seen. Just yesterday in a bar in Minocqua I talked to a couple young guys at a local bar. They had caught a 50.5 and a 51 and multiple fish 40"-45"....I said thats nice. With the weather the last week being in the upper 70`s and low 80`s, fishing hasnt been that great to say the least...so I know the were feeding me a line....If I would of had a couple more drinks in me, I would have said... geez, what were you doing wrong? I caught 5 over 50" and lost a real big one.. if it dont look like a 50 i shake it off.
My Grandpa told me years ago that the first liar dont have a chance

It happens. I've run into guys who said "yeah, we got one about 50" today!" in lakes where a 45" fish is caught about once a season. How many times have you heard about the fish that was "probably close to 6 feet long!!"?

It used to bother me. These days I walk away with a smile on my face and think to myself: "They're either full of #*#* or they just plain don't know what the **** they're talking about."

I just tell people what it is. Saw three, caught one, about 38", Screwed up a big one one over by _______...

The guys who are actually going to go out where you told them you saw fish and try to catch the fish you said you saw probably can't catch the ****in' things anyway.

If it's someone I know and I'm not going back for it, I'll tell them exactly where we saw fish, what we were throwing, what time it was... Go ahead. I'm not coming back until next year. That fish will be long gone in a week or two. Somebody go catch it...

There is certain twin cities metro lake I fish fairly regularly. It never fails that 3 out of 4 people I talk to put 2 fish in the boat that day. Apparently I'm doing something wrong.

To me it's kind of like that trick you do with your dog where you pretend to throw the ball and he runs for about 30 feet and stops to look back at you like "wait a minute... Where's the ball? You're an a%*$%&!!!"

Great. You fooled... A DOG. Brilliant.

When someone tells you they caught a big fish or a bunch of fish, they need to back it up with pictures unless they want to be accused of lying. It's one thing to not tell anyone if you caught fish. That's the smart thing to do. But don't go around claiming you caught a 56 incher and then make up some BS about why you don't have a picture. Another thing that's becoming a stupid trend is posting a big fish picture on FB, then not stating the size. You know the only reason is because they want someone to ask them how big it is. The ego people are getting in this sport is getting out of control.

I know a couple people that claim all kinds of 50's from water that doesn't have very many of them as well. I just laugh.

Here's some honesty for ya. I fished really hard the last 2 weeks and do not have a fish in the net to show! Lot's of lost fish and good chances though. Sucks, but oh well! Deer season is coming!

There's a local gentleman who happens to have caught the longest fish in the Lunge Log database for almost every lake in the area. Gotta just laugh.

It does get annoying when your friends lie to you routinely and without being prompted. Not a blow to the ego - I already assume they're better fishermen than I anyway.

I only get to chase these fish a few times a year. If I have caught something that day or not I always answer honestly. I don't see a need to lie. But I'm not into this sport for ego gratification. If I were, my ego would need a microscope to be found. Lol. These fish kick my butt on a regular basis. I won't tell people where "exactly" or what "exactly" the activity is/was on. As far as the "blowhards" go...whatever I know you're not worth listening to.

I'm going to make a slight change to that.

All fishermen lie, except you and me; and I'm not so sure about me! lol

The standard reply in camp on the annual Sabaskong Bay club outing to the question of; Where did you see it/catch it? It was the island with the pines and the rocks on it.

^This is the case for me as well. I'm honest about what I caught or didn't catch. If it's day one of a three day trip & I'm moving/catching fish I'll be a little vague about the location if I'm planning to return later. If it's the last day I'll tell someone exactly where I've seen fish, chances are they won't still be there when I return weeks or months later.

I disagree a bit with this. I put the odd pic on FB, I never state a size....why...because some joker is gonna argue it no matter what you say. Truthfully I think its the people that NEED to know how big others fish are are that have issues with their ego. Screw it, let them stew in their jealously that someone else may catch bigger fish than them.

We have a local Ottawa area guide, that claims to have the live release world record at 62 1/4.....

Literally, no joke , every time you would see him coming off the water he would have a 40 pound 50 incher or two, and claim to have lost, or seen a fish pushing 60 inches or 60 pounds...every time...without fail.

This river is good, but not that good. Lost of very good anglers fish it, and 54's are really rare....60's....hahahaha

If you want people to leave you alone about your fish, just tell them you catch a 50 each time you go out. I think you'll quickly become the boy who cried wolf, so when you do actually catch one...no one will be there to care.

For example, at last count, I've had 1387 fifties in my boat. But I might be off by one or two...
