Taking my wife out for the annual fishing day next week and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions of lakes within say 1.5 hours of the metro that are currently experiencing a good panfish, bass, or northern bite and what seems to be working. I usually only a get about 4 hours out of her before we are done so looking for lots of action and I don't care what kind of fish it is.

What day? If its Friday I'd strongly recommend heading to Mille Lacs to put the wood to the 'eyes. Season opens back up on Friday, July 28.

You definitely don't have to go far to find action.

East Metro - Lot's of bass and panfish in the Chisago lake area (N and S Center and Green are my favorites). If you haven't fished Big Marine before it is a very good bass/pike/panfish lake.

West Metro - Tonka is a great choice particularly on a Tuesday as it won't be too crazy. Advantage to Tonka is that you can bring a musky rod along and a handful of baits and if you see a fish while bass/pike fishing you can at least come back to her and give it a try.

Looks like we'll be cancelling our trip there and headed elsewhere. If i was a business owner up there I'd be livid

If your bass fishing and small pike fishing no need to leave the metro,,just head out HWY
5,,Chanhassen,Eden Prairie,Victoria, any of those pothole lakes,,mitchel,Ann,snail any of them along that route you can hook 1 1/2 -2 1/2 lb bass all day barring a cold front,,trolling shad raps on Auburn in 12-15 ft for small pike,,that whole area of metro is an action zone,,plenty weedy now though. Or rattletraps trolled on the weedline on Tonka for action pike

My parents used to live on Granite Lake. A little further out, but we caught fish regularly there. Trolling black/silver Shad raps on the deep weed line worked.

Echo Tonka for a weekday. Medicine is also very good for everything as well. If you want some big crappies/sunfish, I'd check out Sarah. The pad/slop fishing for bass can be pretty epic there as well....
