Posts: 214 Location: Beaver County, Pennsylvania | I have been dabbling with creating some glidebaits very similar to a lure maker in my area that has passed away. I have the lure looking fairly good in terms of likeness and shape but I feel like I have to ask if anyone has any tips or pointers for doing the same thing over and over again. I know practice and repetition are tough to beat but I want to make each one wood(maple). I know I could probably switch to a resin and cast them and adjust weight accordingly and pound out a bunch but like mentioned before would like to keep them all wood. Some of the shapes I have required some intense hand shaping. I could go the easy route and stick to what shapes a router bit will give me but I believe I am onto something with my current remake and cant for the life of me figure out how this man was able to do the exact same thing thousands of times over the years with almost zero variation from lure to lure.

Posts: 212 | If it's that consistent, it's either a duplicator on a lathe or a jig with a saw or router.

Posts: 360 | Do what I do. Make a stencil out of 1/4" plywood. Get the edges smoothed and shaped how you like. Use double sided tape and put it on the wood you want your lure made out of. Use a band saw o rough cut then use a router and and trace the sencil with it. I can pump out 15 baits and hour easy. I'm from western pa and don't know who your talking about

adudeuknow - 7/22/2017 1:06 PM It's a flat bait. If it is flat, then probably use a hard board template, 1/4" and after getting cut close with band or jig saw, attach the template with double sided tape and use a router bit designed to follow a template to finish cutting. They have the guide bearing at the top of the bit and it follows the template while the bit cuts. I don't make lures but I do wood working and have used that technique for making duplicate pieces. works well with a little patience and a good, sharp bit. I put the wood on a no slip mat on the work bench and that held it in place while routing.

Posts: 360 | I used a hack saw to make my outside edge lines then take a dremil and remove the material inside. Probly faster ways but I don't make that many of them

do you do that after the lathe or before?do you use jig?

Posts: 214 Location: Beaver County, Pennsylvania | you could create a jig on a table saw that keeps your bait at the angle you want for the lip depending on depth of lure. for squirko and leopardi baits i am pretty certain this is how it's done. i feel like the large chunk that creates the flat portion on the underside could be cut out prior to the lathe(but not necessary) and then the smile is cut out with a jig as well giving it that triangle appearance. they make make multiple passes or just use a dado stack. i have never tried it but i am fairly certain i could create one of those. i am sure the guys that make a lot(leo's, squirko) use a lathe duplicator rather than a set of calipers but i'm not certain. i was not given the info from the lure maker when visiting. that room was off limits. lol. very hush hush Edited by adudeuknow 7/29/2017 5:04 AM
