I've ordered supplies to make my own bucktails and made one over the weekend and I took it out and tried it, I noticed the blade doesn't always want to spin, I think it may be too heavy for the single blade and that may be why. Is there a rule of thumb you guys that make your own baits have regarding blade size and weight? Or number of blades? Interested to hear your feedback!

Thanks,

David

Can we see it? What size blade did you use? What size clevis, what size bead below the clevis.

I'm learning here with ya. I should be getting my supplies to start some bucktails shortly. If all beads are plastic the clevis might be creating a lot of friction between it and the plastic, causing it to not want to spin. Try to put a metal bead on each side of the clevis. It should create less friction. I here solid beads are better for near the clevis too. Good luck!

For me, I will always use a solid bead under the clevis. The bead above the clevis is really not needed, but you can maybe put a small plastic bead above if you want.

If u put a too large bead above clevis, it could actually hinder the rotation of blade as you pull it through the water, as pressure will pinch, and slow the blade.

I never put a bead above the clevise and a small solid bead below it. I also space the blade from the skirt so that it does not touch it if you hang it vertical from the line tie.

To get your blade(s) to spin better first you need to bend the clevis so that it is in a perfect “U” shape. Second would be to use a solid metal bead below the clevis. If you’re really anal about it then you could use a thin cone shaped grinding stone on a Dremel to smooth out the holes on the clevis in order to reduce friction. I put a hollow bead or two above the clevis only to help prevent the blade from getting caught up with the leader. When I use the hollow beads I use a Dremel to smooth out the rough edges of the holes so that they won’t hinder the spinning of the blade.

What size blades are you using? 8's can be finicky. 9's and 10's seem to work better.

I ordered size 7 blades, but I ordered a 9 to experiment with, so I will give that a shot!

X2 with what Zib said about the "U" shaped clevis. I often have to use long nose pliers to bend the hole tabs perpendicular to the wire. Less friction = better spin. Solid bead below the clevis(es) and smallest solid bead above it/them. I started out making copies of popular bucktails but soon I made what I thought were improvements. i.e. I have settled on epoxy to coat the wraps bc it is much more durable.
