Did you try calling Thornes to see if there were cheaper shipping options? I'm guessing you shipped internationally, so it's not overly surprising.

I just ordered a few lures from Scotland a month or two ago. That is another continent and the shipping was less than half of that and there was more lures/terminal tackle shipped!

Well I suppose you guys could go down to your local mom & pop tackle shop to make your purchase. If it's a "gotta have" lure they don't carry then you need to pay to play I guess.

Did the package have the actual shipping price listed? I ordered an ice fishing rod from thornes. Shipping and handling charges were over $30 but the tube said they paid $9 for shipping charges. Seemed like high handling charge for a 32 inch shipping tube and a few inches of bubble wrap.

That does seem like a lot, I only paid $25 for a 9' musky rod. Are you in the speedy zone? I thought that only applied after like 8' but maybe not?

I know this isn't from thorne but I ordered a 6'6" st.croix that breaks in 2 peices from cabelas. I only paid standard shipping for that (under $10 I think)

Just received it today and yes it did. They charged me $41.18 USD for shipping and the package said $35.86 USD. They also charged me $44.99 for the lure that is advertised on their website for $41.99. I only deal with them when Musky Shop doesn't have an item I am looking for, but I think that will come to an end now too. The funny thing is even when I add up $41.18 and $44.99 and convert it to CDN, they still charged more than that!!

I can't speak for any other company as to shipping charges or prices of product but I will tell you that shipping to Canada is expensive if you want it done right and get the package in a safe and timely fashion. Yes sometimes even more that shipping an equivalent sized package to an overseas country. Don't know why it's that way but it is. Most companies list their delivery charges as shipping and handling. The handling part may include such things as extra packaging and the time it takes to fill out custom forms etc. As noted you can usually ship via UPS for less money than USPS but UPS will collect brokerage fees on the delivery end which will usually far exceed what you would have paid by going with postal service. In the case of some oversized items the only choice may be UPS and you will pay through the nose for that. As I said up top I can't speak for any individual retailer but it's in their best interest to treat you as fairly as possible. Companies like Thorne's and Musky Shop have been in this business a long time and if there was a way to do it cheaper with reliable service I'm sure they would be doing it.

I guess it's more to ship north than to ship south. $44 for a bait to go to CAN but I can order some PDeez bucktails from CAN and only pay $20 to get them here.

USPS offers "first Class" shipping to only postcards, letters, and large envelopes for international shipping. A 2# bulldawg will not fit in those, the package would have to go Priority.
I ship many packages internationally and Shipping prices are crazy, the only way I can reliably ship is the flat rate priority boxes. I have tried several times to ship in my own box. Its more expensive to do so. Its like $25 for a medium flat rate, or $45 for a large to Canada.

I cant speak for any other retailer on how they ship, thats what I experiencing

https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/Notice123.htm

USPS has First Class package service to Canada, for up to 4lbs. (64oz), and Canada is in the least expensive zone. For packages between 1-2lbs it's $15.50 but for 3-4lbs...it's $36.50.
USPS Priority Mail International Canada between 0-1lbs is $31.75 and between 3-4lbs is $39.40.
So for lightweight stuff you're probably better off First Class, but once you get in the 3lb range Priority is worth it. And if you're over 4lbs it's got to be Priority.

Some places charge actual shipping per order. Some places charge a set amount that covers their average shipping (some packages will be less, some will be more, it equals out over time for the retailer). Some places (esp. online) charge less for their products and shipping by taking smaller profit margins on the product sales, not because their costs to buy products or ship stuff is cheaper, but because with very low overhead costs they can afford to take less profit.

As a customer, unless I "have" to get something that only one store carries, I will go through the purchase process at a couple of different online stores at the same time. Just open a new tab for each store and compare: after purchase price, shipping, and taxes are all figured in I buy from the one that's the lowest price. Online shopping makes this soooo easy.
