| I had planned a week trip with my family to Cass this summer, but my wife doesnt want to drive that far Grrrrr! So im looking for a backup plan within 4 hours of rochester MN. Needs to have a decent campground with water/electric and a beech or playground or somthing for the kids. Id prefer to stay away from the metro.
Any ideas? |

Map if you could talk your wife into a 1/2 hour longer you could be on lake vermilion in 4.5 hours . You have scenery a beautiful Lake you can fish walleye musky crappie Largemouth and smallmouth bass and if you go in for a full week better to be on a lake you want to fish then not fish just a thougjt |

| That's getting pretty tough... The Grand Rapids area would be right about 4 hours. Sorry I am not familiar enough with the area to recommend a campground. Good luck. |

Location: Minnesota | If your thinking of vermilion better start contacting some resort's to make your reservations to get the dates you want .don't worry about the Wild Life the chimpmunks and deer are more a frade of you then you are of them. You could also look at vhfrbo.com vacation homes for rent by owner I've done this some nice places and its like your own cabin. There are some nice resort's that are family related plenty of things for young kids to do. |

| You need to talk her into another hour,,,vermilion is beautiful lots of bays out of wind,,leech has a couple of very nice campgrounds one Corp of engineers and the very nice friendly new leech lake campground. Mile lacs is tough muskie fishing now and it's not the most beautiful I consider it almost a metro lake. You could camp at lake independence in west metro,heavily stocked but not exactly a wilderness experience you can fish they could go to mall of America. Or go the other way and camp in whitewater, forestville or root river state parks and fish for trout different species but nice camping.

| Yeah, time to tell the Wife 30 minutes is a small price to pay for the change in scenery / beauty. Also, V sin't that bad. You should be able to hop on 52, take it to St. Paul and then get on 35 and make the trek up there. All Interstates so you can drive fast.
The Prairie Lakes out west have solid fishing, but they are not pretty compared to the North Central and Arrowhead regions. Those lakes are right on the geographic border between the forests of MN and the Prairie Farm country, more to the latter. WBL is basically non-stop cabins and a town. Miltona isn't as developed, but you can see corn fields. Nowhere near the scenery you get up on Vermilion. |

Would you recommend Okoboji?? Lance Christensen formerly of Berkley told us either most muskies per acre or per hour fished in midwest can't remember which,,tourist area with camping.

Location: Ames, Iowa | No. Leave Boji to the jet skiers. It is almost ringed with homes. Remember Clear Lake? It's not nearly that bad, and I think it can be a good lake in the late summer and fall for muskies. For this guy Clay I'd encourage him to head north to a Canadian look alike. |

Sounds to me like Brainerd area fits the bill... Lots of resorts around there to cater to the family, and if you get some time to sneak away, you've got the Mississippi river right there, Shamineau to the West, and an hour drive north, Longville lakes/Leech Lake area.
5 hours is not that bad of a drive, but if there are little ones involved, I can see that being more of an issue... but you could make it fun... See how many times they cross the mississippi river as they go, then visit Itasca....

| I'm from SE metro and the Vermilion drive is actually one of the better ones since I35 is such a direct route. Would highly recommend it for what you're looking for. |

Location: MN | If you do not like a lot of fishing pressure I'd stick with Cass. The V is pretty darn busy from late June until Mid September. I'm always amazed how many people will cut you off on such a large lake. 4.5 hours to Vermilion and 5 hours to Cass. Or better yet talk the lady in to another couple hours and head to LOTW. Just my .02 |

Location: West Central WI | You didn't put any restriction on lake or state in your post so I'll throw out two in WI as an option that are about 2-1/2 hours from you in WI. One is Lake Wissota State Park just outside Chippewa Falls, WI - https://wisconsinstateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/lake-wissota-...
The other is Pine Point County Park on Lake Holcombe, just north of Cornell, WI - https://www.google.com/#q=lake+holcombe+campgrounds&rflfq=1&...
Both offer good muskie fishing with plenty of water to keep you busy. These two are about 30 minutes from each other and there are several other muskie lakes within 45 minutes or less of these two locations. Nice beach in the Lake Wissota state park. Plenty of shopping, touring (Leinenkugel's brewery), and restaurants in the area near Lake Wissota state park. Lots to do for kids too - Irvine park, including a nice zoo in Chippewa Falls is one thing. Depends on your kids ages. PM me if you have any specific questions.
