I'm thinking it is just a beautifully marked fish. "The fish was hooked in the upper area"....of what?

Guessing upper area of the mouth. Goose lake is a private community built around an old strip mine lake. Hundreds of those lakes in the area, many are clubs, other private communities but mazonia wildlife area is public. No muskies there though. Some of those private ones have some big muskies in them and they are stocked with some interesting stuff.

If its a private lake, shouldn't it be a private record?

BINGO!!!!!! That's exactly what I though when I read about that fish. I could have a 10 acre pond and grow a world record Muskie, I don't see how that should be allowed.

The water is public, the land surrounding it is private. Ie. caught on public waterways.

I think.

Goose Lake is a private community including as the water. You must reside in Goose Lake or be accompanied by a resident to fish there. Muskies were stocked there over 35 years ago. An Illinois muskie record came from these waters in the 80s. It was caught on a Lunker Lure while bass fishing.

In Illinois water is water as far as state records go. I have always thought that public fish records should have to come from water that anyone can fish, but that isn't the way that it is. Look at how many of our state records are from private waters.

Any proof this is a tiger? It wont let me open the article and from the picture Im not sure its not a cool patterned pure strain.

DNR is genetically testing it if I recall correctly. It certainly looks like a tiger

Kind of strange the DNR needs to test the fish. Just look at it... Do they test every potential record that comes in?

Maybe it is a Tiger. Never know until you know I guess. Just looks like a pure. I was just wondering if they test every fish just to be sure... even if it's an obvious Largemouth Bass.

For some reason I also think it might be a PURE MUSKY---- Looks markings wise like a Tiger--- But I have a friend over in Goose Lake--- If it was caught out there-- A lot of those are Pure Musky that were stocked-- I am sure there are tigers in there also---but I think it is a beautifully marked pure strain.

Not a great shot of the tail. But looks rounded. Its a tough one. I vote tiger. Will be fun to see what the genes confirm.

I am far from an expert, but I'm going with 100% pure bred Musky. I see spots, not stripes. Just my 2 cents

bass guys always winning the musky records. i am NOT saying the fish was caught illegally, but after reading the story, does anyone else wonder if the fish fish was snagged "on the top"? just asked if anyone else wonders about this? again, not saying he snagged it, but curious if anyone else thing he may have? however, snagging with a rooster tails would seem pretty hard to do...

Seems to be a fine example of Esox masquinongy ohioensis.

What a truly beautiful, healthy fish, record or not.

Congrats to the angler. I wish she was still swimming!

If I caught a 40" that looked like that and had a good photo, I would get a replica....especially out of Illinois! The last documented 50 lber or second to last out of Wisconsin was caught by someone that saw the fish laying in shallow water and went back to their cabin/resort/campground to get a muskie rod. The person as I recall "caught" it on a Buchertail, a larger version of the Rooster tail.
Mr. Tom Gelb got the last official 50#.

I just received word the from the geneticist that we had ID’ing the possible state record tiger muskie (see below). It was a pure muskie not a tiger. I hated to hear that. It was beautiful fish and looked like a tiger to me but again, that’s why we do the testing. Rob Miller has been in contact with the angler to let him know. He was understandably disappointed but still happy with the fish. 36 pounds 0.4 ounces is a very nice muskie in anybody’s book. I can send the report if any are interested but it is pretty technical.

Good afternoon,

I hope this message finds you well. I apologize for the delayed response, but please find attached a report detailing our genetic results on the putative state record Tiger Muskellunge. The samples presented some technical difficulties, hence the delay in delivery of our results. However, we have completed our assessment. It is our determination that the putative record fish is in fact not a hybrid Tiger Muskellunge, but is indeed a pure Muskellunge. For technical details, please see the report. If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or need for further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact me at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely,
Mark Davis

There really isn't any natural repo here in IL. So this fish did its job. It got stocked, it got big, and it got caught. That was all it was supposed to do.
