I also want to add, should I use saltwater flash or magnum flash?

Well blades are mag 8 and mag 10. Hooks are 7/0 3551 Mustad. Flash is up to you but they use mag flash. Weight up to you they use 3/8. Wire .51. But all these can be changed or adjusted. In fact I would change things to make improvements.

What Nathan said.

You can mix in some of the saltwater tinsel for various effect.

The most common upgrade to the DCG is to use a heavier weight so it casts better in the wind.

Thanks guys, I am definitely planning on making them heavier. I just needed to know how much they use so I can make sure I'm improving.

A lot of a good bucktail tie comes from the little things. Heat shrink on the hook. Attention to detail on the tie of the flash. How far you have the blades spaced from the body of the bait as well as the line tie. Etc. Etc.

For your first few baits pay a lot of attention to your thread on the ties and spacing of your material. No need to put it all on at once. Don't be conservative with the thread and do not be afraid to apply the Hard as Nails a few times during the tie. That all adds up to the durability of your skirt. (This will really come into play when you graduate to Marabou.)

Nothing is more dissatisfying that taking out your new home brew bait and casting it only to see the skirt gone on the first few casts.

Good luck.

Thanks Brad. Here's another question I just remembered. When should I use 2 skirts over 1?

personal preference on the size/profile of the bait you are building. 2 or 3 skirt will obviously give it a longer profile. you can use beads in between skirts as well to add length.
Weight too is preference, most of the time i use 3/4 or 1oz on the end. But "balancing" the weight to the rest of the bait is important for performance. The best thing about building your own is that if it sucks you can take it apart and try again.

Here is one I'm excited to test out this year, Features a #12/13 blade combo.

Yep, there are no rules. Just build and see what the fish say. If you have an idea, try it. If it falters. Oh well. If it gets eaten, enjoy the elation.
