my thinking is that a metal round reel would stand up to heavy lures better but they dont seem to have the speed. what do you like to use?

For a dedicated rubber reel it is hard to beat a daiwa saltist. No cast control but with rubber you don't need it anyway. Built like a tank with speed.

You would actually need a more durable reel for bucktails than you would need for rubber because rubber has a low resistance. But if you have the money and want a tank, there is nothing better than a 500 tranx. If you don't want to spend that much on a reel calcuttas are good too.

Agree with Musky Mojo about durability of the reel for rubber, other than if you don't clamp your thumb down on the spool each time you rip the rubber. If you don't do that, I'd want a fairly beefy reel with a strong anti reverse.

I've been using Revo Toros (NACL, Beast, Toro S) for a while now with no problems, but I also use thumb pressure each time I rip rubber to hold the spool in place.

Tranx HG or Daiwa Saltist 20. Both are bullet proof, powerful and fast.

Prior to the low profile reel bandwagon, although I jumped on it to, I was a big fan of Abu 's black 7000 big game reels. I still use my 7000ihsn for rubber, and if u can find one, hands down, imo, the best 7000 ever built, was the black 7000cl big game, which came with a 5.3 to 1 ratio with a 31" ipt. I have both reels and they will never be for sale! KDAWG
