For years, I've read numerous articles that when fishing jerk baits, it was wise to use a high speed reel for picking up the slack line, so u can remain in the best hook setting position. In theory, that seems logical. But lately, I've have seen some pros going with the slower reels, more in the 5.4 to 1 ratio. They claim it would be easier to let the bait pause, which again seems logical when fishing in colder water temps. In the past, I used my high gear ratio reels. Anybody use their slower reels for jerk baits? KDAWG

By no means a pro, but I feel a high speed reel for jerk and glide baits causes one to reel too much line and sometimes upset the pause or glide required to get the most out of the bait. I prefer 4.6 to 1 on my jerkbait rods. You can still reel as fast as you want if overworking a bait for effect.

Just my opinion.

prefer a 5.1 to 5.4 on my jerkbait rod for normal size gliders/jerks... for big ones like a 10" phantom I do use my tranx

It depends. The cadence is what makes the pause length. If your mind is set on moving the bait as the slack is taken up then yes the faster the reel, the faster the line is taken up and the quicker you move the bait. Slower reel takes longer forcing a longer pause. If you can get past that, you can have a long pause with a fast reel.

personally, i like HS reels because i find that i can work gliders mostly with the reel by doing quick half turns, rather than using the rod as much.
the extra IPT is nice for doing a quick turn during rod pulls on jerks as well.
can always slow down by choice!

No way. I can turn the crank two times with my rocket or 5-7 times with a winch. I am an intelligent being capable on not disturbing my pause, I would not want a low gear ratio for any reason.

It depends on the bait. I use HS for my cadence baits and 5:4:1 on my dive and rise baits.

I use a 6:4:1 for everything. I find its happy medium.
