And thus begins my annoying posts every Friday til December....

Headed to the Fox Chain tomorrow with the Bite Back Bait boys and possibly Sunday solo. High, chocolately water but hoping to stop my @ss beating streak on the water I am currently mired in.

Trout in western WI or southern MN...not sure where or what day, yet. We'll get a few though!

Chasing crappies here! Water temps still in the high 40's so mostly just want to get out in the boat!

I'm between boats so I'll be in Minnesota looking to write a huge check. Wish I could be slinging gliders

I'll be attempting to. Don't know what this weather has in mind for us in Pittsburgh though. A balmy 35 with whipping winds and periodic rain/snow. Not very enjoyable but they make rain gear for that

I was planning on that this weekend, but with the weather figured I should try again later. The more I thought about this question, the more my mind drifted towards walleye. I'll have to check the usgs website on the flow from the dam I had in mind.

Looking at 70s in central MN tomorrow, so I'm taking my son out for some panfish. Should be a fun afternoon.

It would be a crime not to. Sunday mid 70's, no closed season, fish still in their pre spawn funk. Get some suckers and try to get a healthy one. Not very often fall pattern extends into the spring. Either ice or water temps in mid 50's. Good luck everyone south of Wisconsin.

Got back few hours ago. Soaking suckers along deeper edges with no results. Water temps hovering around 51. Probably should have moved shallower but the wind was crazy. Had hard to to anchor. How about you guys? Any success?

We bank fished for 'bait', better known as really good to eat canned. Got run off a slow bite by thunder boomers.

Smoked sprouts in oil I might recommend. Lack in size they sure make up in taste. Hearing, also another overlooked trash creature. In oil including some onion aND some aromatics. In sour cream, again some onion, pickles, and hard boiled eggs, topped off with some parsley and a dash of mayo. Delish. Happy Easter

Ended up bringing the 4wt. & 6wt. out for some fly fishing for trout on Sunday. Was committed to dry flys for the morning seeing them rise constantly but couldn't fool one. Once 11am struck I moved to another stream an hour away and switched to streamers, nailed a few. After the bite died down, switched streams again and started nymphing and had a couple more. Man was it good to get out again! I couldn't help but think, this would make great flathead bait if I was allowed to harvest hehehe

I've spent the winter in the Quad Cities (Davenport, IA area) this winter and have sat in on Muskies Inc Chapter 11 meetings and helped during an outdoor sporting show. My daughter is being treated for cancer down here so hanging out with these guys has allowed me to be involved with something that gives me joy. I belong to Chapter 6 (First Wisconsin Chapter) in the Chippewa Valley, WI, where muskie opener is still a month and a half away. I had to go home one weekend so brought back muskie gear and bought an IL non-resident license since most guys in Chapter 11 fish in IL. I managed to get out the last two weekends and have plans to go out again this Friday if the weather cooperates. In the last two weeks, we've boated three muskies - 33.75", 34.25", and 40.5". For me, it's a complete thrill to start the season early and on new water to me. Hope to get home in June and hit it hard on the home turf in WI.

Yes it is still stocked. Alot of guys like to fish the natural shoreline. It is shallow there and there can be some weeds in 2ft and less of water. The harbor can have the warmest water, fish will be in the harbor this time of year. As high as lassale lake was, i cannot imagine too many if any boats are getting under the bridge to the north side. Not sure you need to get to that side right now.

Where you specifically targeting Muskie because normally anytime a year I can't keep the little yellow or white bass off my walleye lures and worm harnesses. I will be out there this weekend. Mostly going after walleye but I might toss around for Muskie a little since I've got some new gear to play with. Anyone got any tips for the walleye, if the water is high I doubt I'm going under the bridge.

Might go to the forest preserve and see if there are some trout left on Friday too.

I used to catch walleye by the island but you have to go under the bridge. I don't think my new boat would fit even if the water was low due to the windshield.

I'm getting a new boat soon that I'm going to rig up so I can take the windshield on and off within a minute or two. I'm going to replace the bolts or screws that are in there with wing nuts so I can do it by hand. Saves about a foot when trying to go under a bridge.

I know this is off topic but is there a limit on the yellow bass at heidecke? I had a friend catch about 25 of them and he wanted me to see if I could find a limit for them but I couldn't find one so he just let them swim. Me and him were both curious about frying some up and seeing how they are.
Thanks,
ToddM

Much like any part of the idnr website it is hard to navivate. I looked at other sites and found size limits but non mention yellow bass other than they do not count towards the striper limit. My guess is there is no limit on them.

Was out there today, the water temp. got up to 56 the water level is high and we can't get under the bridge. I was told by the 2 workers there that they were going to lower the lake 1" a week. The biologist were out there today and they have 5 capture nets out on the natural shore line they told me that they do stock muskies and the last time was this past Sept. they didn't know how many they stocked but they said they were about 13" long they said that they captured some big muskies in the nets and things really look good in the future. As for me I didn't see or catch any but will try again next week.

Do you think you could fit a flat bottom Jon boat under the bridge? Have you seen people on the north side? If I could fit my duck boat under the bridge I might take that and try the north side if no one can get over there.

Edit: mmmmmm, seems like there might be 30 mph winds on Saturday so I don't think I will be out there on Saturday. Maybe Sunday if the weather gets better. Might just take Saturday and go drown crawlers at the forest preserve in hopes of a stray walleye.

One thing about Heidecke and Muskie I've learned is Ive had much better luck on smaller bait's. Think bass fishing and I think you'll do better than throwing big bait's. That's me experience every time I've fished Heidecke witch used to be a lot.

Some boats did manage to get under the bridge. 1 or 2 thats about it, the north side is just about untouched the water has been high since opening day.

Headed to the cave will be there Sun-Fri. Will hit the reservoir and the tailwater from the dam down to Triplett creek.

Made a trip in Feb moved a very nice fish in the river on a hell hound. Anyone have any tips this time of year or experience in the tailwater?

What i look for at the heidecke lake bridge is the supports. The top part is straight then it angles in. If the angled part is showing at all you can get a john boat under. Right to the top of that it becomes difficult. If alot of the angled part is showing then most boats can get through. Just aproach it sjow and see what you can do. I have had to lay on my back to get under during high water. I used to think i liked the high water but it puts more rip rap in the water givi v more areas for the fish to be not to mention the rock to bottom transition much deeper.

Just talked to my "little brother" who is a Conservation Officer for Illinois, in that area, and he says there is no limit on yellow bass.
