Well folks, I don't want to hijack the "night fishing thread, and have had I've more than my share of success catching muskies at night...

I've never caught any northerns at night, not even a hammer handle, even though I've caught some nice fish between dawn and dusk..

Thoughts?? Opinions?? Experiences??

Could be because the muskie is the no. 1 predator, in your waters, and the pikes are to scared to move around in the dark.

Here in Europe i have caught plenty nice pike after dark.

I caught a 39.5 inch in the 8 in total darkness on a dbl10. I haven't caught very many pike at night but I am using huge baits typically. I do remember catch quiet a few while trolling for walleyes after dark. They do bite at night sometimes.

In over 50 years of fishing I've caught 2 pike after full dark one last year.

With the pike invading the Kawartha Lakes we are starting to see some big tigers.I'm wondering if they behave more like muskies or pike .

Ive probably had 15 in the boat at night on the Madison Chain over the years. went along time with out any at night lately its been 2-3 a year. Some nice ones over 40" also. Caught on a lot of different baits too- Spinnerbaits, Bucktails, Crankbaits, topwater and Bulldawgs.
Part of why I catch some may be that's its really never completely dark on the Chain with all the streetlights and city lights, some spots I can change baits without using a head lamp. Some have been on clear full moon nights also

Ive fished for eyes at night in spots we target for pike in during the day and even have seen them sitting on the weed edges (with spotlight) but have only caught a handful over the year once the sun goes down. The ones that do bite, again this is rare, are consistently larger fish in my experience.

There are also tigers in the lake I fish and have yet to catch one at night or see one follow (which is mostly impossible at night anyway). From the tigers I have caught during the day I believe tigers behave more like pike in terms of feeding preferences, but just my opinion.

Question

Have any of you more experience night guys noticed a tendency that some lakes just don't have a night bite where we know on other lakes night bite is the only bite?

Thanks Brad

From what I understand the tiger musky will be more aggresive than regular musky more like pike...

Wow. I have caught a good number of pike at night. A number of years ago my boat partner and I pounded big pike after dark and couldn't get one musky to bite. It was mayhem with big pike and that was around midnight or later when the action was best.

Also I believe some lakes have better night bites than others. I think pressure and boat traffic helps drive that a bit.

I was let to believe that pike become mostly inactive after dark. I've never caught one after the sun is down. 99% of my after sundown fishing is for walleye. I was told years ago by a guide that pike don't eat after dark. Obviously this isn't 100% true but I do think they aren't very nocturnal.

I've caught northerns after sundown but never after dark. As others have posted, I've also gotten plenty of incidental walleye as well as largemouth and smallies after dark.

I have caught pike after dark but it was always when I was fishing for walleyes. Similar to other reports here, they did tend to be larger specimens Jan relation to the average size in the body of water.

I have read that northern pike are such a sight feeder that once it's getting dark they just know not to waste energy, using a jerk bait catching lots of pike its fun to see when it get to dark for them to target the lure and you stop hooking them in the mouth but more strikes and misses and snags in the side, or they just get the line and your next twitch there is just no lure.

I fish lakes with a lot of pike and tigers and I've never caught either after dark. Lots of bass and walleye on musky baits though.

I caught one at about 11 pm last summer and that's honestly the only pike I remember catching after the sun was completely down. Western MN here.

As mentioned above, I typically upsize for night fishing so that's probably part of it.
