In the northeast it seems most new muskie anglers are guys that grew tired of pitching jigs under trees and wacky worms. Therefore the're often in their 30' and 40's when they look for a new challenge and start muskie fishing. That's how it started for me 8 years ago. Never looked back since. I don't throw anything over magdawgs, maybe that will help extend my longevity in this sport.

anyone here see the problem with the growth of muskie fishing?
Not here in Ontario. The Muskie fishery has been managed properly for 25+ years now. There are more Muskie now than during the mid-60's to late-70's due to over fishing and weak enforcement of fishing regulation laws. The size and number limits back then were the major problem of why the numbers of Muskie,Pike.Walleye were depleted to all time lows.Commercial fishing also took it's toll on many species.Hell, the Blue Walleye in Lake Erie flat out went extinct during the early 70's,...pollution had a lot to do with it too. I worked at a Muskie hatchery in Marmora, Ontario for a summer during 1985 and you wouldn't believe how many millions of fry were hatched in that facility, nurtured in the rearing ponds and distributed throughout various bodies of water in Ontario.

I Think here in Ontario we will be ok with the increasing number of Muskie fisher-people.I can't think of any Muskie angler who does not practice good catch and release methods.Back in the day people would club them and bring them to the dock to show off their trophy fish,...then throw them in the garden for fertilizer,...or feed the cat and occasional bear with.

I think he means the opposite as in there are more older than younger people fishing nowadays. Al Lindner gave a good seminar about that some years ago how many of the younger kids are more interested in videogames instead of the outdoor activities. People back in the days before having 100s of TV channels internet etc use to go camping and get out more now technology is great but has turned out most of society into lets just get dinner at a drivethru instead of cook it and I want everything else done with a push of a button individuals. Am just generally speaking I have been at drivethru myself but I think most of you will get what I'm talking about. Fishing involves going outside and its easier to sit on the couch and watch TV or play videogames

I have to agree about Doug Johnson, I was lucky enough to fish with him a couple times. I'm 57 years old and have been battling bone cancer since the fall of 2015. I still primarily wade fish but throw more small lures as my stamina and body can't handle a whole lot. Went to Nebraska recently and caught 2 twitching a Cordell Redfin. Both fish were big 48.5" and 50.25" so I guess I still have a little ability left in these diseased, old, bones.

Wonder what the best reel to burn double 10s will be in 40 years when I'm 70?

Not sure about the reel but it willl have to handle double 30's on a 20ft rod.

Doug Johnson gets on site sometimes, I know hes in his 80's or close to 90. I saw him at the Minnesota Muskie Expo a couple years ago and he still looked like he could fish all day. He's definitely a great muskie fisherman and a really nice guy.
