The catalog is in final stage right now. Final proofs etc. Should mail out right towards the end of January.

The catalogs just started getting mailed. If you're on the mailing list they should start arriving soon. Bulk mail can take a couple weeks to arrive depending on the volume at your post office so please be patient.

This catalog should be banned. Every year it comes to your house to show you what you don't have, question whether what you have is really good enough, and generally begin a path down the sad trail of emptying your wallet into the musky trail of tears. Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the fish I can't catch, know I already have the baits to catch the ones I can, and the wisdom to know this is a terrible hobby that will only lead to divorce and bankruptcy.

I'm in absolute shock everytime I look at current prices. I'm glad I got started in this game 20 yrs ago, I don't know how anyone could afford going through the bait hording stage at todays prices. I thought 20 dollar baits were expensive, not that long ago.

When I retired, I moved about 30 minutes away from Rollie and Helen's. So now I go in person a couple times a year. That is not really better. You see all those shiny lures hanging there and see how great the colors really are, the price seems better. Well, not all, I thought I was going to need the defib machine after glancing at the Headlock and its price. Holy buckets!! I am sure is a very well made bait but whew! Old guys like me remember when the best baitcaster available came in its own leather case lined with velvet for less than that.

Maybe, but I am sure in the early 1970s, you could get an Ambassador for less than $85.

OK, since my previous post may have been wry or sarcastic, let me assign some props. My cabin is just outside Eagle River and I take Hwy 45 North to get there. There are some truly great musky shops there including my favorites, R&M Musky Shop and Guides Choice. But, let's be clear, Rollie and Helens "Musky Shop" stands in a class all by itself. There's just nothing else like that place, my post above was just idle rambling about the high cost of stuff today, and I go out of my way to take Hwy 51 North at least once every 3 or 4 trips just to "be" in a place that's sort of like the Vatican to Catholics. So, I hope Pete didn't take offense, you can clearly make a hundred dollar bill disappear there faster than your ex-wife's lawyer could find it, but it's all well worth it!!

No offense taken on my part. I agree the prices of some lures and equipment can be scary. However, I and my fellow staff members are constantly showing people how you can get into the sport or at least continue without having to spend a pile of money. Take a look at the price of a Windel's bucktail for example or a Smity crankbait. Frankly sometimes I wonder how these guys can make the bait at that price and the beauty is that it will catch a fish just as much as a bait costing two or three times the price. Now if you want to spend the monthly rent on buying baits etc. go for it. I fear that much like the fly fishing world we are becoming very elitist by insinuating that everyone needs several $300.00 rods and reels of comparable value and a coffin sized tackle box with $50.00 baits in it. Then of course you need to put all that stuff in an 80-90K boat with the appropriate gas guzzler truck to haul it around. Don't fish in your own back yard. Travel all across the country to buy the fish of your dreams at the latest "hot destination". Just my opinion but I think we as fishermen are neglecting the joy of the process just to be the guy who dies with the most toys.

Well said Mr. Pete.
I think some people think they can buy success with lures or equipment. Seen it in Bowhunting, ($1000 for a bow!) and muskie fishing.
I spend a lot, but mostly spend on being there.
No replacement for hitting the target and being there when the target is there.

If you have not had the opportunity to shop in person at R&H, you have missed out on an opportunity to see good customer service first hand. When I bought a seasonal cottage on a musky lake years back, I went there, explained that I was on a budget but wanted to get back into musky fishing after a 25 year break. They listened, talked to me about where I would be fishing, hooked me up with a rod and reel combo, suggested a couple of lures and never tried to "upsell" me. The two guys I talked to did say never skimp on line or leaders, buy the best you can afford, that quality there did not cost much more.
I go back at least once a year and the service is always very good. Never any pressure, just help. Plus they are smart enough to know if they just let you wander around in there, you will get hooked by something. Last time I was there, I just needed some new line and a few leaders, having been there earlier in the year. I got those, but somehow when I got to the counter, I was also carrying a soft tail Phantom. Not sure where that came from.

Agree completly that Rollie and Hellens is a place that must be visited, I hope they make it and stay around forever. Killed me when Pastikas closed, as I loved going into that place as well. Internet shopping has replaced a bunch of the brick and mortar stores, but I hope some of the good old muskie shops never close.
