I was wondering if someone might have some insight into finishing the thread on a big marabou bucktail?? I have been tying for a while mostly as a hobby, but during this past season more and more guys have started to ask me to do custom baits for them. I am thrilled to do so! However, I haven't perfected the thread on the head of the tail, or the finishing wraps. I want to get a nice clean finished look, perhaps even put a logo or name to my work. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

I have been mindful of making nice even wraps to finish, then mix a little paint with two part epoxy and cover the head, then turn slowly while it sets for a nice rounded even look. While this generally does a good job, and seems to be much more tooth proof than a lot of the baits on the market, it is still hard to get a real nice look.

I have tried using shrink wrap, it works if the thread is tied pretty even, but I'm not a big fan of the look. I have considered using a 3/8 inch pex crimp on the end. I think it would be great for the build, but not sure about the finished look.

I am aware of the UV resin, however have never worked with this.

I will try to post a few pictures here as well.

Thanks,
Austin

Lot of times, I just use Finger Nail polish to seal the deal! Mostly with the fleck!

Nice looking bucktails. I am thinking of maybe making a couple of them.

Looks alright to me. I like to seal with nail polish. Let it dry and gorilla glue 2 part epoxy works really well for me!

Looks fine to me. I typically take a piece of mono for the last 8-10 wraps. Double the mono over so you have a loop facing the top of the tie. Then from the bottom, wrap your last series of thread up to the top, tight, but not so tight you can't pull it back through. Then once at the top of the tie, cut off the thread, feed the tag through the mono loop, then pull the mono back through the threads you just did. Trim the tag and apply epoxy and done. Looks nice and clean and holds well (especially with the epoxy).

Here is a spinnerbait I just finished. Not sure if you can see the threads close up. Nail Polish with large Gold fleck.

This magnum is 12" long W/ BAT, and 5 layers of bucktail:)
