It's december 2nd and there's no snow or ice in my part of Minnesota and the Lake I fished yesterday on the last day of season had 44 degree water temps, most other places with a Dec 1 st closing should be wide open too???
Rants, speeches, theorys, like to see the season stay open untill your states gets around to legalizing marijuana?? " my current stance"

It's december 2nd opening day of winternet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nersh,,interesting!!
Would that tactic work on. The Ganga side of things??
If I'm a hypochondriac and intent on believing I'm sick would that justify my use of marijuana for medical purposes????

The law is in place to protect muskies from spearing. If you need to go fishing, try Wisconsin or get on the big pike bite this time of year. Pushing an extended muskie season is unnecessary.

Someone needs to come up with a heated bump board.

There really is no debate necessary. The only way the DNR can pinch anyone who wants to musky fish after the season is closed is if they are dumb enough to say they are musky fishing when asked. Tactics being used and baits being fished are not and never will be considered illegal.

Yeah the only people that are going to care if you keep fishing are other musky fishermen and they shouldn't.

there has been a lot of effort recently to promote stocking of muskies, part of the equation for success is being honorable as a group, so requests will be viewed as they are being initiated by a reputable group.

Take that idea a little further. Make it a fully enclosed heated bump board and you'll be able to bake it immediately after discovering that the fish is a legal keeper. What a treat that would be during a cold day on the water !

I once saw a well known musky guide 'musky' fishing the week before the opener in Oneida County. I thought to myself... really man, all musky anglers know you, and you are blatantly musky fishing before the season opens. That's a jerk move pal.

As for the Sham Wow guy... I thought he was dead?!?

Or we could just push them to make it illegal to harvest muskie by spear or better yet through the ice all together (since hook and line in the winter isn't safe for the fish unless a lot of preparatory steps are taken prior to fishing, which most people wouldn't do) and extend the season to through January. I suppose the drawback is that would get the dark house association's panties in a bunch.

With the way things are trending I think we will see a lot of Decembers with open water to fish in years to come and not just the rivers. I've duck hunted since I was a kid and continue to see freeze up trending later and later. When I was young freeze up used to come pretty close to MN deer opener most years.

With no safe ice to fish on I really would have enjoyed getting out after the muskies one last time last weekend. Sure I could say I was pike fishing and there is no way I could be ticketed but any one with any common sense would know that is a crock and I'd prefer not to be 'that guy'.

December 1st closure is the MN-passive aggressive way of handling.

The reason muskie season closes is because some guys were targeting muskies through the ice and muskie anglers didn't like it. Muskie anglers pushed for the season to be closed.

The closure was implemented back when the minimum was at 40". Smell is correct, in many lakes muskies were being targeted and excessively harvested which promped the closure.

If the muskies are sustained by the DNR and others stocking efforts their should be no closed season.

"Sustained by DNR" and "trophy destination" are typically mutually exclusive. We pushed for it for good reason.

Actually I could agree with this if there is little or no natural reproduction, why not? The only reason I would maintain the current season is if fishing methods used caused significantly more mortality which is possible during winter with swallowed live baits. On the other hand, there is probably no better time water temperature-wise to catch and release a muskie than in late fall, winter or early spring.

Maybe the DNR realizes we are all crazy and closes it so we don't get killed going out in bad ice conditions???

There's gotta be a definitive date for closing, and nobody knows when ice-up will happen. Many years we're lucky to even get to 12/1. Fishing for muskies through the ice is very dangerous for the fish, regardless of water temps. Even if there is little natural reproduction in our lakes, many of the fish still make the attempt, and are very vulnerable while doing so.

I don't want to fish for muskie through the ice. Wouldn't it have been easier to just push for no ice fishing muskie?

The 54" minimum has made it a trophy fishery. I think 52" would have done the trick.

Our stocked lakes should be open to fishing during open water. I don't want to travel out of our state to fish for muskie in spring. BTW I'm not one of the idiots breaking the rules in the spring. I can wait, but why should I have to? I have been told by many different sources that our stocked lakes are sustained by the stocking of fish.

Ben when you say "we" remember you are not representing all of us.
