Location: Northern Wisconsin | Big cold front coming, they are calling for 30+ mph winds on Saturday. Anyone else heading out. I want to run suckers but need to figure out where I can hide from the wind and keep good boat control. Anyone have tips? Drift sock or 5 gallon bucket? Or should I just head into the wind with trolling motor on high? I am hoping this is the front that gets the big ones biting. They have been laying low for me this fall.

Posts: 8716 | Personally, we haven't had great luck in those situations. If you can find somewhere out of the wind your chances might be better but a lot of the areas where you're likely to find quality fish are likely to be very difficult to fish. The biggest issue in wind and waves is keeping your suckers down where you want them. With the waves and wind, boat rocking, etc. you're effectively jigging your suckers instead of letting them swim naturally. Not that you won't get bit, but I'd expect to drown/kill a lot of suckers in the process.

Location: Contrarian Island | if the wind is out of the NW, find a nice rocky point on the NW side of the lake and hover your suckers on the tip and both sides all day...they'll get bit... Edited by BNelson 11/17/2016 2:20 PM

Posts: 67 | set up a controlled drift with your suckers down a piece of structure or weedline using the wind. don't use a rod holder but hold your sucker rod in your hand to prevent your bait getting beat up and thrown off kilter by the boat rocking. run it on a short line without a float. i've have had some of my best fall days in a stiff NW wind like that, just try to take it easy on your bait

Posts: 221 | Looks like a high of 30 saturday and sunday with 15-20 mph winds here in western MN. Not sure it'll be worth it. Edited by Schultz345 11/17/2016 5:44 PM

I suggest bringing a propane torch to thaw out those balls of steel if you decide to brave the elements.

Location: Northern Wisconsin | Thanks for the tips. I know a few steep shorelines that should be semi protected from a NW wind.
