Posts: 16632 Location: The desert | Please wear your life jacket. I just got home from pulling 4 duck hunters and their dog from the lake after their boat capsized. The dog was the only one wearing something close to a life vest (neoprene hunting vest). Luckily, all 4 and the dog survived. They were in the water for about an hour. Depending on where you fish, not every volunteer fire department/ambulance is well equipped for a water rescue. We were extremely lucky that one of our neighboring towns happened to bear our page and had his pontoon boat readily accessible. If you call 911 for you or yourself, stay on the phone with them until they tell you to hang up. This can be cruscial in finding you or someone else quickly. None of us think it will happen to us, but it can happen in an instant. Stay safe out there!

Posts: 1126 Location: Minnesota. | Thanks Mike. This just could save a life!! And you post it annually. I hope it's taken seriously. I just had to store my boat. Takes lots of strong coffee to keep me out of the "doldrums"!! Edited by Jeremy 10/23/2016 9:56 AM

Posts: 20173 Location: oswego, il | Having been dumped into the water, i know things you could not ever think of can happen. I had a seat pedastle pop out casting an ultralight. Back flip head first into the drink. Glad the water was warmer. Freak things happen. You can never predict when a bad set of circumstances can line up.

Well, Jon... At some point, my life WILL get back to the point where I can get back out there and fish 60+ days a year like I did for so many years. That will likely include fishing right up until the ice is too thick to get the boat through it. Unfortunately for me, I will also no longer have the benefit of being in my 30's or my 40's... Being out there in the elements dealing with what could (and eventually will) happen is one thing when you're 25 and built like a brick #*#* house. When you're 50, I don't care who you are -- it's a whole different game. Life is a whole different game when you're 50, and I'm knocking on that door... I'm gonna fish until I'm dead. I'd prefer to do everything I can to ensure that "when I'm dead" does NOT include "I'm an great person, and I ****ed up and died."...

Posts: 32761 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Received the Frabill I-Float suit just in time for the Andy Myers Lodge trip this weekend. It's surprisingly light and very flexible offering plenty of room to move in the elbows, shoulders, and knees. The I-Float is a USCG certified flotation suit, and carries additional insulation. Pockets are nicely placed and roomy. Zippers are large, well placed, and on the bibs go up high enough to get them over boots with reasonable ease. Bib strap buckles for the shoulder and back harness are large cam buckles like the Storm Suit. Nice. Plenty of places to attach needed ice accessories and comes with safety Ice Picks, everything snugs up windproof and waterproof, and the suit feels great. It's not the color I expected, but it does look great. This should be an excellent late Fall, very early Spring, and Ice suit. It'll get a work out at AML, hopefully I'll get the new suit slimed. It looks to be cold up there next week.... Attachments ---------------- IMGP0075.jpg (258KB - 428 downloads)

Clever to have those large reflective patches on the shoulders, center and hips. The time of the year for that type of suit is when days are short and if you go over at dusk, or before dawn, partner or other searchers will be able to spot you with a flash light very easily.

Posts: 16632 Location: The desert | Steve, for a full report on the suit's effectiveness we're going to need photos and perhaps video of you entering the lake and floating around for a while. I look forward to the full review!

Posts: 1516 | How would this suit compare to a Mustang Survival suit?

Posts: 32761 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I'd venture this: The Frabill is designed considering ergonomics of the open water and ice angler and they did a great job. I have a couple friends who own the Mustang, and the only less than shining comments I have heard is in the realm of ergonomics, but nothing serious. Not sure of the weight of a Mustang. I-Float weighs in at a bit under 7 pounds according to the packaging. I haven't seen anything claiming the I Float is a 'survival suit' per se, I think the idea is to float like a cork if one goes through, be warm and mobile enough, and have the tools on board to get back on to solid ice and get home wet, unhappy, and safe. I think this thing is as comfortable as my Ice Suit, and lighter.

Posts: 8703 | Steve, any thoughts on the effectiveness of a flotation suit that's made of bibs and a jacket compared to the one piece suits offered?

Posts: 32761 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | The I-Float is USCG approved, so it will do the job. I have a 1 piece Ice suit built by Arctic before Frabill bought them, and rarely wear it. I find the bibs/jacket more comfortable and versatile; I like being able to use one, the other or both. The bibs have ice safety pick holders as well. There are several ice fishing suits that are PFD rated now.
