I'm looking to start a family vacation tradition and my sister is complaining that the drive to Vermilion (7+ hours for her family) is too far since they can't afford to do more than a long weekend. So I was thinking of choosing a western/northwestern wisconsin lake for muskies with a mind for stuff to do for kids/families as well. Obviously I've circled the Hayward area but I'm also wondering about Yellow, Shell, Wissota?

Thoughts on Hayward area lakes as well? Lac Courte Oreilles, Chippewa Flowage (wasn't impressed 15 years ago), Namekagon, Grindstone, Round, others?

Thanks for the input...if time of year matters, we're looking at end of july, early august.

There's good fishing to be had in the Hayward area. A lot changes in 15 years, but if you were looking for numbers the flowage probably wasn't the best choice. LCO really isn't a musky fishery anymore. Namekagon is decent and Moose, Teal, Lost Land and Spider are also worth checking out.

The Hayward area also has plenty of diversions for kids and families too.

I wasn't specifically looking for numbers...I have ant the best chance of 40" plus fish.

Back o Beyond resort on teal lake has good muskies and a good beach for the kids. On the east side of the lake which is quieter. My kids loved it.

Lots of resorts and VRBO's on Namekagon, it's a great all around fishery. Crazy number of pontoons. I think they are required if you own property there.

I'm definitely leaning towards Namekagon. Any comments on Wissota?

Wissota is a fine lake, but definitely not one I'd plan a family vacation to. I fish it a couple times a year because I have friends in Eau Claire but if you're debating between that and Nam, go north for sure

I like lost land and teal lakes. Spider chain is right there also. Lost a big fish there this summer at boatside. Caught a few nice hybrids there also. There are a couple real small sleeper lakes there with some big fish also. And a few with high population totals. Hayward overs a few distractions for the kids/women also.

Look into Boyd's Mason Lake Resort near Park Falls. They prepare all your meals and the food is excellent. Well maintained rustic log cabins set in old growth pine forests. All sorts of fishing opportunities, including float trips down the Flambeau River. Lots of activities for the kiddos and great beach area. It's a winner for families for sure. Little spendy, but you will have no cares in the world while there. Check out their website. One of the few American Plan resorts left in Wisconsin.

Hire Micah Langkamp 715-462-4637, for a day or two. He lives up there and knows ALL the lakes and ALL the species. Open and honest guy. And knows quite a bit about real-estate up there also. Nice young guy, you won't be disappointed !!

Yes, Micah is a good guy, and will put you on some nice fish. He did grow up in Chicago as you guys noted, but spent his Summers in Hayward growing up, so he has been fishing those lakes since he was a kid. As for larger fish, I believe Namakogan would be your best bet. But, there are plenty of lakes in the region.
I am heading there on Wednesday!
Good luck

Yes but the picture was taken 3 years ago. And all the glory to Hayward area lakes, fish in a photo was taken at Mallard. Again Im sure Micah reads the forum and will give true prespective on the situation I created. It almost seems like it is embarising to fish smaller ponds and for me the forum like this should be totally oposite of the idea.

For those you that mentioned the "quiet lakes," How is that? I'm not sure how I feel about being on a lake that I can't go faster than 10 MPH.

Everyone goes faster than 10 MPH. The nice thing is you don't have people skiing or wave runners.

Agree on the quiet lakes being faster than 10mph. There is just.fisherman and a few pontooners out there. I wouldn't mind putting bleachers on one 9f the islands on teal where the saddle is. I seen 5 boats bite it in an hour there once.

Wissota will have a dense algae bloom between the 1st or 2nd week of July thru mid September. Same for the west side of Chippewa Flowage. Just save the family weekend trip for a boating/panfish lake and take a serious week long trip to Ontario

The Flambeau River west of Park Falls and Elk River chain in Phillips area are good for finding a 40" fish. Phillips has some family oriented events scheduled on weekends during summer and fall.

I live on Wissota. Yes, there is an algae bloom, but with any wind at all, it's stirred up, and that which stays on the surface gets pushed to the downwind side of the lake. You can always find reasonable water on the big lake or find it up the Chippewa River or Yellow River. Lots to do in the Chippewa Falls area. There are also several good lakes within 30 - 45 minutes if you're willing to trailer your boat. PM me if you want specifics.
