I typically run between .8 - 1.2 mph. I have noticed that some people seem to hover over a spot or move extremely slow through spots. Am I missing out on something?

I like to work way slow when I am on a solo mission. I'll give an area different cast angles too. If there are a couple of us in the boat I will go quicker, but usually 0.8 is my max speed.

We clip along pretty good, Usually 1.1-1.4mph doesn't matter if solo or with any one else. I have also noticed that a lot of people move extremely slow through spots. I like to cover water looking for aggressive fish

Wow, 1mph through a spot? I would be one of the slow guys as well. When I am on the spot that is normally very productive I try to move less than .3mph, no matter the wind speed. For me, it is about replicating depths, speeds, and angles.

Depends on what I'm throwing. Burning bucktails, then I'm burning through spots and covering water. I think thats usually 1.0 - 1.2 mph.

Slow moving baits, I take my time to make sure all the water is covered.

Definitely .425 mph, no more, no less unless of course conditions are more than optimal.
If less than optimal, all bets are off.

As said depends on what you are throwing. It also depends on where you are fishing. On a big body of water where you would spot hop, your looking for active fish. A small lake you may slow down and cover it well.

All depends on how I'm fishing. If it's a hot sunny day and I'm burning blades/cranks I'll run about .75 mph. A cold front moves the fish deep or into slop I'll run much slower.

This has been discussed before and it made me think. Say you're working a straight line (like straight edge of a reef or straight weed line). If you're going 1.0 mph, and let's say it takes about 30 seconds for your cast, retrieve, and short boat-side move (L, 8, whatever) - so 30 seconds between casts - you're only placing a cast every 45 feet or so along that line. Are you covering it sufficiently? That's the big question.

On an inside corner you have to basically park your boat and fan cast. On a sharp point, you can swing your boat around rather quickly and still place a lot of casts to cover it.

I try to move at speeds that I feel allows me to cover the spot, 3-dimensionally, to the extents to which I expect fish to be.

One thing I learned from fishing with guides is to speed up, cover more water, and find active fish. With two or three in the boat I'm going 1.0-1.5 depending on the lures being thrown. Solo I'm going 0.8-1.2 depending on lures, and the type of cover/spot I'm fishing. Slow down in weeds, speed up on reefs/flats where fish can see/feel a long ways off.

There is nothing more frustrating to the guy in the back of the boat than watching the guy in front hit every single weed/rock/cast possible, leaving no clean water, especially when the fish are going on what that person is throwing.

Last night I was running the boat slower than I wanted to. Directly in to a good wind. I made a cast, and then another. My second cast landed directly where my first cast landed. I thought to myself, "#$@%", I hate when that happens. Wouldn't you know it, a huge 50 came screaming in on me. Moral of the story, fishing slow and really hitting a spot hard can pay off.

I fish very slow when I am by myself or with people. I might speed it up a tad when there are more people in the boat because you are able to cover more water that way. When I am on a spot that I know has fish I tend to fish it very very slow. As said above, I have had fish follow and hit after casting in the same spot as my previous cast.

Really just depends on the day and how many fish you are seeing. If I am not seeing very many fish after really working a spot I tend to speed up just a little bit so that I can cover more water in the amount of time that I have on the lake (Due to work).

as others have said, too many situations and variables to say how slow or fast I'm going to go... on lotw when we are running and gunning the boat isn't going slower than 1.2 on some spots...
cover water, find active fish ... now if you have a spot you know has fish, then slow down... pick it apart... sometimes my boat doesn't move 200 yrds in 4 hrs... other times I might cover 4 miles of casting in that same 4 hours.. the key to catching fish is finding the biters...sometimes that just means waiting and camping on the spot, other times that means covering water...
Sled you don't even musky fish any more!

Yeah but I bet any of those tackle bustin salmon he's catchin with his gal could drag a 70" muskie to it's death if tied tail to tail.

I fish as fast as the presentation and fish will allow.  Presentation also includes number of anglers in the boat.

I rarely camp.  Would rather fish at an efficient pace and return to the spot multiple times throughout the day.

What happened to treat others how you'd like to be treated?!? Ha. A lot of the guys I fish with do own boats, and sometimes I'm in the back of theirs. Lots of factors that go into how fast the boat is moving through a spot, but one consideration is always giving the others in my boat a fair shot at fish and clean water.

I go pretty fast 1-1.5mph when I'm searching for fish or fishing areas. When I get to known fish spots, I slow it down and work the spot more thoroughly. I wouldn't say there's a given formula, fish it how you want to fish it.

So.. Is it a stupid idea to camp out on a prime spot and just cast it until the fish show up?

I have anchored up for a hour and went through lures till I caught a fish. I have done that two for thee try's, with a missed fish on the third.

I like to work an area slow. I've casted over a spot w/o hits then casted back over that spot a moment later bang. It's often surprised me how often the fish didn't take the bait on the 1st cast or 2 in that general vicinity. Since I know the hot spots I don't like to waste a lot of time on a lot of water, but work the fish holding spots good and slow.

Couple years ago I saw my neighbors working a small area for hours while I fished a lot of shoreline. The next weekend they repeated that pattern, moving no more than 200 yards in any direction for day and a half, winning a 5 lake group tournament. They don't always fish that way but decided it was right that time and it paid off.

water clarity plays a roll in the speed i fish, so does fish activity,
faster boat speeds in clear water , slower in stained water
faster boat speeds when fish are active, slower when fish seem to sluggish

Well i spent 7 hours on 3 small spots yesterday. I tried buck tails first and then crank baits with nothing as far as muskie go anyway. I came back around and hit the spots a 2nd time this time using a 8" phantom. I managed to get 2 smaller muskie and missed a 3rd. I usually fish very slow, I think i get more enjoyment out of "working" for the fish. That's not to say you aren't working when seeking active fish.
