Posts: 52 | I have too much crap in my boat when we are out fishing for a week and changing partners daily. I insist that we fish out of the left side of my boat and pIle our junk on the right, both for safety and efficency. Am I out of line?

Posts: 67 | I fish both sides but I fish LOW in my buddies boat that always fishes off the right side. I don't enjoy fishing my own wake half the time as we drive past a spot first just to fish it back the other way. Some spots fish better one way or the other and I think you put yourself at a disadvantage only fishing one side all the time. Wind changes things too. I know some pretty good guys that catch a lot of fish off one side but it's definitely not for me.

Posts: 2224 Location: SE, WI. | Port, Left, 99% of the time. If you hold the rod in your left hand, your strength is a cross your chest, to the right !!! " better leverage" JD Edited by jdsplasher 8/22/2016 6:21 AM

Posts: 859 Location: MN | It's your boat so you make the call. I'm crazy about stuff being out so my boat is 100 clear. Release tools and rods are the only things out. Everything else is stored.

Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | when people start slingin baits all over the place you will get to learn how to remove a hook from someone ... port 100% keeps that possibility from happening. Edited by jonnysled 8/22/2016 6:58 AM

Posts: 815 Location: Waukee, IA | Either side, depending on where structure is related to my boat. Even then I'll send s cast the other direction occasionally to cover all the water I can. I'm always conscious of where my backcast is going as to not hook anything or anyone.

Posts: 1969 | makes no difference to me.. catch lots of followers by working a spot, give the fish 5 minutes to "re-position" turn boat around and work from the other direction. It would drive me nuts to try to fish the same side on every spot, to each their own I guess.

Posts: 200 Location: Minnesota | Doesn't matter to me. I'm equally good at not catching fish on either side of the boat.

Posts: 97 Location: Tulsa, OK | I usually set up on a spot so I can cast from port side. Being right handed it is just easier and more natural casting and setting hooks, going into figure eight as well. When wind won't let me do this, I cast off starboard and feel awkward like throwing a football left handed.

Posts: 28 | All based on wind, best boat position for structure, etc. I don't own a boat so I find myself fishing in the back a lot, but I also run the boat fairly often as well. I am almost equally good casting both left and right handed and that comes from fishing with a variety of situations/positions with varying numbers of people in the boat. Doesn't matter to me. Whatever keeps my partners and I the safest while also fishing effectively.

Posts: 409 Location: Almond, WI | I'm more comfortable with port but use both. I run a tiller so no real difference there, I do usually keep my rods on the starboard and net handle on the port. It's awkward using the trolling motor when I'm on starboard, I don't feel my handedness really plays into it and I use both right and left handed reels.

Posts: 1209 | When using jerk baits with a odd lefty a change of order and a direction of travel may be thought out. Sometimes playing the wind is nice but normally I go to the first part I get to and start fishing

Posts: 4 | Most guides we have fished with setup to cast from the port side. We have adopted this approach and almost always work a spot from this side. Gear and net is on the starboard side. Many of us can cast over either shoulder, so it works for us. For me figure 8's seem more natural from this side

Posts: 410 Location: Wakefield, MI | Depends. If the fish are on the port side, I'm usually casting off the starboard. If they are on the starboard side, I'm usually drinking coffee.

Posts: 285 Location: NE Wisconsin | Casting went out in the eighties.....I either vertical jig or troll! I jig off the left side back with my tiller,,resting my left elbow on the tiller. With a side consul I jig off the right while resting my right elbow on the right side. I troll off both sides.

Posts: 1209 | I note a lot of the points above are correct but sometimes I must switch positions of fishermen and cast off a specific side when jerkbaits fishing.

Posts: 297 Location: Not where I want to be! | Port, and more port. Hookset is better if your right handed. Helm is on starboard. makes sense.

Posts: 251 | It is your boat so No, you are not out of line. Fish the way you want if you are in your boat. This shouldn't be a big deal so others can adjust.
