Hey guys,

Thought I would post some photos of Abu Garcia's other new large Low Profile baitcasting reel the new Max Toro released at ICAST 2016. This is a budget LP reel with an all graphite frame with the same basic design of the state of the art Toro Beast and Toro S.

In addition to the frame material change there are some small changes inside but should still prove to be a very capable reel at a great price.

We've been using this reel for a couple months, and are happy to report it's a winner all the way around. Price point at suggested retail of $149.00 with a dead center in the middle retrieve speed, casts smoothly and well, handles light to heavy baits, great drag, plenty of line capacity, and about the same durability inside as a Toro S. I found myself selecting this new animal for the day most days with the Rocket and Beast in play for FAST or BIG.

The Max Toro will be the entry level (but quality) do-most-of-what-you-need low profile Muskie/Pike reel of choice going into the future.

Is the frame size the same as the Toro S?

50 size only?

I have a NaCl 51. In store the Toro S felt a little taller in my hand- not a big deal and I would probably easily get used to it. Is the Maxtoro similar in feel to the S? How does the stock handle compare with the double handle for the NaCl?

Seems like they really are hitting a sweet spot with this reel, at least for me personally. At $200-300/reel for the previous Toro varieties, I've been content to run one good reel for blades and use old C3's for everything else. If this sells on the net for $120-130 and is reliable, that's starting to get down around the cost of a used C3 + few years of parts.

Line pick up is way to slow for me. Same gear ratio and pickup as my c3s and I always feel like I'm over working my arms reeling trying to work baits.

The MAXTORO 50 and 51 offer 26 IPT. If you need faster in the ABU line-up, then you need the Toro S 60, at 29", or the Beast high speed at 31" or the Revo Toro Rocket. The MAXTORO is actually faster than the Beast 50 4.9:1, right in the middle of the pack and the same as the 4.9:1 beast 60. That was the target with this reel.

Very close in size to the ToroS 50.

I fished spinnerbaits, several topwaters including the Suick Nitewalker, some crankbaits, and some Suicks yesterday all day with the MAXTORO, and was very happy with the reel. Nearly can cast half or more of the line off the reel with a Topper Stopper.

The handle is about the same as the ToroS paddle. I think the power handles will fit, haven't tried.

I fished a Revo Toro Rocket yesterday when tossing the Violent Strike Extractor in the heavy pads, easier to get it immediately up on top and keep it on top reeling slowly, less work and exactly what the Rocket was designed to do. The Rocket is too fast for my liking tossing most topwaters, hard to slow down enough, and not my choice at all for Suicks, 6" cranks, etc.

Looks like a great basic or entry level reel. And sound like a good price point. 27ipt is plenty fast for most lure presitation out there. I used calcutta b for 10 years and I think they were 24. Used them for every thing.

I checked and any of the other handles for the Toro Beast/S will fit on the Max Toro.

What are diffrences between max and s.

The biggest differences are the Frame and Side plates that are Graphite composite. The Drive Shaft on the Max Toro is Brass, on the Toro S it is stainless.

Those are the primary differences affecting the performance of the reel over time.

They're available now, and thinking of picking one up myself. You can Google it to see who is currently selling them.

I'll have a write up very soon for the Max Toro as a long term review. I received one of the early prototypes and have put over a year of use with multiple baits/scenarios on mine. The short hand version is basically a cheaper Toro 50 S that performance wise has been no different than the S. it casts fantastic, and has had zero mechanical issues in over a year and I haven't oiled it or performed any maintenance whatsoever on it besides changing line. And bear in mind this is a year in Tennessee so truly year round use in all seasons/conditions

I have one as well as you can see from an earlier post, and have had the same experience as Wood_Duck. Great reel, especially for the price.

Picked up one of these last week, and have been out twice with it. I'm very happy with it so far, and have thrown quite a few different types/weight baits on it with no problem. This reel is not for pounders, but since I don't throw them, no problem there. It seemed to be a little more difficult/finicky to get adjusted than my S60, but once dialed in, worked great. Good reel for the money.
