From Steve Reinstra's Facebok page:
A photo of a Leech Lake Strain Spotted Minnesota Muskie PIT Tag# 470806713C. This fish was stocked in Madison on 10/29/2007 at 12.4" Long. It grew a little over 26 inches in nearly 9 years. A little research done with the fun!

Geez... that should be a 50 incher by now.
What's your speculation on this? Leechers are known to be fast growers and thus why they are desirable to stock. Just a "runt"?

Could be a male, perhaps. I hope we see more tags reported!

I love big spotted muskies....

probably a male...there are upper 40s leechers in Madison. I truly believe they will shoot past the 50" mark....

Were all the Leech Lake fish tagged? My buddy caught a 47" last weekend and we thought it was a Leech strain, but we didn't notice a tag.

PIT tags are put inside the fish...not visible on the outside...

Would be interesting to know the survival rate on the mad chain. They do not do well in illinois. Some are caught in the fox chain and an occasional nice one but the percentage is low.

Any idea how the PIT scanners are distributed? I would assume they are given to the guys that catch the most fish on the Madison chain?

Yes, the club asks a bunch of guys each year to keep a scanner in their boat... not sure on the total but I think there are 8 to 10 floating around?! I think the Leechers are doing quite well in Madison... survival rate seems to be good...and they are getting big! I'd bet we see some hitting 50" this year or for sure next
the sad thing is, even if the data shows the leechers grow to bigger size, the WI DNR has NO plans to switch stocking to leechers...so basically I'm not sure what the study is for... the Cap City Club will hopefully just keep spending our dollars on stocking leechers...
As the WI DNR biologist told me... "it's not the DNRs job to create a fishery with lots of 50+ inch fish, it's their job to create a healthy fishery"

and to that, they have done a great job....

What is the study for? Data collection.
The DNR's current plans may not be the same as what their plans become in the future. 20 years, 50 years, 100 years from now our kids and grandkids may experience something totally different than what is going on today. And that only changes when you speak the right language: scientific data. Survival rates, catch per unit of effort, growth rate, ultimate size; these all matter the most in making a case for something when you can quantify them.
And, despite what a biologist may have said, angler wishes do matter in determining the DNR's management strategies and decisions, the entire Conservation Congress is built on that premise. Just look what happened to "earn-a-buck" (tool for managing a "healthy" deer herd) when their was enough public pressure to dump it.
In the meanwhile, we get 500 LL strain stocked per year in Monona on top of the 1400 WI strain. Win-Win.

I wish they would do something like this in WV ... They tag electroshocked muskies but when you catch one that has been previously tagged its hard to get the info off of those little metal bands. I think angler feedback and information is much better judge of what a fishery has than a DNR electrofishing boat coming through once a year.
