Posts: 1209 | I cast 99.9% of the time and I by far just sit in the seat longer than I troll. Can you point out your fishing preferences? I know I will jig 15 minutes a day when eating but that's not me seriously trying to fish so I wouldn't count that. If you jig and do others please add your own option I know there are scenarios for everything, but time that your u actually spend fishing is best described how?

Posts: 815 Location: Waukee, IA | I cast almost exclusively but do like to troll when I need a rest. 90/10 is my best guess as to what ratio.

Posts: 88 | I would say 85/15. We will often cast through a spot, then turn around and troll back across it. It's amazing how many strikes we get, or fish we catch trolling back across even if we didn't see a fish casting the first time through.

Posts: 20174 Location: oswego, il | The ratio is different on different lakes I fish. 100% on some, 0 on others. Some I may do both and that can change based on the time of year. I think alot of the answers we are getting to alot of these questions, what lures, how many rods all these questions are in context to where people are fishing. They're scope may be quite narrow and quite different from someone fishing another system or area totally different. Edited by ToddM 5/4/2016 10:00 AM

Posts: 1080 | Both knees are shot, both hips are shot, lower back is shot, both rotator cuffs are shot. All from sports in the younger days. The full-time job I have has me sitting at a desk, in a chair, behind a computer for 65 to 70 hours a week. Not a lot of physical movement going on throughout the day while I'm working. The body is at rest way too much these days. The older I get...it's getting tougher and tougher for me to stay on my feet for long periods of time. In my younger days, I was more of a caster. Nowadays...I find fishing more of an escape from the every day life of the job, the stress of the job, the city and the traffic, so for me...fishing is a means of relaxation. It's no longer about catching fish as much as it used to be for me. So...all that taken into consideration, I do enjoy my trolling. For those mental and physical breaks that I very much need anymore these days. But I DO still enjoy the casting too. My body is just limiting me to how long I can do that. I'm forced to split the time on the water. Cast for a while, troll for a while, back to casting, back to trolling. As long as I'm relaxed and enjoying myself out there...that's all that matters. A fish on the line is merely an added bonus. I no longer put the stress upon myself to feel like I HAVE to catch one. Those days have passed for me. For years, I used to put so much pressure on myself and the others in my boat to have to produce fish. No more. I'm back to the mere recreation and fun and enjoyment of being out on the water. Posts: 1209 | Todd, do you fish lakes that you mostly troll as much or less than you fish lakes that have a mixture or mostly cast? Seasons change as techniques do. Give that I would probably go to a lake and cast rather than troll at a trolling lake and get 10 a day.

Posts: 20174 Location: oswego, il | It is a mixture for sure. If I go to Indiana for instance I mostly cast. I will troll there some but only if the water is above 55. If the weather is hot I may troll. LSC I prefer to troll there almost always. I have other lakes I will only cast based on their makeup it is better to do so. One lake I will only go and troll when I know the fish are suspended up in the top 10ft. I won't fish it in the late fall. It's about being productive and fishing the right lakes at the right time with the right technique. I know people who will only cast, bound to waters that are not always productive, won't change their ways and wash alot of baits. I would not musky fish if that is what I was left with.

Posts: 572 Location: Maplewood, MN | I'm a caster. I know I would catch way more muskies if I trolled, but it just doesn't excite me at all.

Posts: 386 | Cast 70% and troll 30%. We can have a really good early season trolling bite for the first several weeks and then I spend 12 days on LOTW in late October strictly trolling. Caught more 50's trolling than casting.

I'm the 1 vote 90% troll 10% cast... it's just more productive for big fish on all (most) all the waters I fish now. For the most part when fishing it's for for a muskie... not just muskies. Posts: 3136 | I added the "lobber" option,,,usually a food item or beverage in one hand the other hand, arm used in a half wind up combined with a big Minnesota sized bait and just lob it out. Edited by happy hooker 5/8/2016 10:16 AM

Posts: 1425 Location: St. Lawrence River | Definitely depends. A couple of my favorite places would be 100% casting. Others are definitely 100% trolling. Just depends.

Posts: 271 Location: davis,IL | 90% casting with some trolling in between during the slow times. Trolling lets me get a good look at some of the off structure spots in open water. I have caught some decent fish doing this little routine. Sometimes fish are a couple hundred yards off the structure in seemingly nothing...no structure close..no noticeable baitfish.
