Posts: 470 | Hey all, Got this guy today on a boat side hit (Went around on a Dyin Dawg several times), bumped out at +/- 34" ( probably 36 if I could have straightened him out). I've never seen one with this kind of deformity before, head seemed kinda large, but otherwise as solid healthy fish with some spawn nips. Released strong too.. Has anyone ever encountered one of these crooked buggers before? RandalB Edited by RandalB 5/1/2016 9:28 PM Attachments ---------------- image.jpeg (157KB - 2217 downloads)

Posts: 1080 | Throughout the years of fishing Webster, the Barbee Chain and James (Little Tippy), have caught a lot of deformed fish. Yes...some with bent or s-curved spines, deformed fins, deformed heads, deformed jaws, deformed snouts, etc, etc. As for these kinds of deformed fish...there's been a lot of talks of these kinds of fish throughout the years, that many believe it could stem back to the process at the rearing ponds before stocking into the lakes takes place? Or...is it simply a matter of mother nature keeping true to herself with keeping some fish "unique" from the others? And some fish that that looked to be the spawn of Freddy Kruger from The Nightmare On Elm Street horror movies that looked as if they had acid poured on them with open sides, no skin, no scales, all deformed muscle tissue. I don't know just what in thee sam heck was going on with fish like THAT? Scary looking though. But...yeah...fish those waters long enough, you'll catch plenty more deformed fish like that. And they're no worse for the wear. Mother Nature has a way of taking charge and some of those fish don't know any differently and grow up to be nice sized, healthy adults. They adapt. Survival of the fittest. Edited by MACK 5/2/2016 8:05 AM

Posts: 100 Location: Bemidji/Cass Lake | Got one on Cass Lake years ago with a huge curvature. Measured out at 46" and probably over 50" without the curve. Old fish that looked to be on its decline.

Posts: 1080 | Sackett and jchiggins....is Cass Lake a stocked lake? Just curious. Reason I ask is...it's believed ( I don't believe it's proven ) that these kinds of odd-ball fish are more prevalent in the stocked lakes due to the stocking/rearing programs...vs naturally reproducing/sustaining lakes. Sure...and odd-ball fish may still show up, genetically/naturally, as a result of natural reproduction, but the numbers of those odd-ball fish would be less than that of the numbers of odd-ball fish in the lakes that are stocked.
