Got a grin out'a this line:
"Hawkins said, it would probably be no match for typical line of, say, 6-pound strength."

Beautiful, healthy looking fish!

It sure looks like the same fish they netted last year at 46 pounds. The markings all seem to line up.

This was copied from another forum:

"Here's what the DNR had to say -

This fish is 49.4 inches and 19 years old. It is a member of the 1997 year class, which was stocked as a 2-year-old fish. It was part of a group purchased from the Upper Great Plains chapter of Muskies Inc.

It was stocked in Spirit Lake in June 1999 at around 17 inches. This muskie has since been caught by gill net crews 7 times, including the exact same date (April 18) last year. She has given us eggs at least two times.

In 2002, this muskie was 34.7 inches and enjoyed a tenure as a Muskie Representative at the Iowa State Fair as a mere 5-year-old. After the fair, it was brought back and released unharmed."

Now THAT is a nice fish! That's Quality right there. I realize they state, in the article, that it's shy by 3 pounds from the Iowa State Record...but THAT is state record material right there...if/when captured/caught at the right time.

Very cool.

Nice fish it just seems like it is a bit over handled I wonder why they don't that it measure it then release it right there instead of taking a tour

Backdraft; the fish are usually not quite ready for the eggs to be stripped when they net them and bring them into the hatchery. On the average year the muskies stay in the tank "staging" if you will, for about a week. Once they strip them, they are released. Unless I am mistaken, they are only handled during the stripping process and capture and release. Obviously this has not been an issue for this fish and many others that have been recaptured several times.
I don't agree with how many muskies the IDNR stocks as far as fish per acre is concerned. But when it comes to growing nice healthy fish through their rearing process, they do a #*^@ fine job!

Great fish! Didn't see a girth anywhere in the articles... wondering how it compares when calculated with the newest formula?

How do you the fish did not sign up for the hatchery tour? What about next year when it shows up for the 20 year class reunion?

Have you ever seen them strip eggs? They don't exactly lay over and say take me. That fish will take 3 maybe 4 people to get the eggs out. The males on the other hand, are males. Give them a magazine and a jar, they bring back what you need with a smile.

I bet that fat broad had half the males in the lake in the fyke net with her.

Ahhh. OK got it. I thought I read that they took the big fish to the Iowa State Fair. My mistake

Thanks for the clarification on the process. This is great for Iowa and all of us as well !

The muskies are not targeted during the gill netting for the walleyes for the Iowa walleye egg collection program but do get into the nets. Neither the muskies nor walleyes are injured during the netting process due to the nets being checked every 3 hours and the net strands are physically cut to free the fish from the net, placed in a tub of water and transported back to the hatchery. I have helped the DNR net the fish so I know what happens. Most muskies only get their teeth caught in the net strands and just lay there, unlike northern pike who typically roll and roll in the nets.
Many don't agree with the Iowa stocking levels but the two Iowa chapters of M.I and a Becker foundation grant are currently funding a study to help determine why we don't get good survival rates for newly stocked muskies. We/they are inserting radio transmitters into 12 inch fish before stocking and then will be tracking them for up to 4 months. Maybe everyone will learn something.

Being so well known, I'm surprised the locals haven't given her a name yet.

I named her Sarah. The summer of 2014 she winked at me while blowing a pounder out of Spirit.

Does anyone know what kind of nets they use? The fish is so clean and unmarked, it is surprising. Some years back, the WI DNR was doing a survey on the lake where I live and they used fyke nets. Opening day I caught a fish they had netted and fin clipped. It was only a little over 30 but it was pretty beat up from the net. It was about a week after it was netted and it was quite healthy, just lots of missing scales, etc.

(My wife joked that it was not a very smart fish, first it got netted and then caught early on opening day. I said, hey, I need all the dumb fish I can find.)

Wrong! Since they are so unwelcome in Minnesota these days, they all migrated down to that fertile corn country. That's clearly a corn fed cow muskie

This fish was taken in a 2 in by 2 inch mesh gill net. They extend them out from shore about 400 feet and check them every 3 hours. Most muskies only get their teeth hung up in the net. The nets are cut around the fish to minimize any damage to the fish

^yep Iowa is currently all gill nets to my knowledge. They are more to target walleyes but do seem to work well at capturing muskies as well and aren't too bad on the fish if checked often... which they are.

You'd swear from the smiles that those guys just spent a week casting double dawgs to land that fish, not just lean over and pull it out of a tank at the hatchery.

Also great example of how one fish can look very different (fat) in two different photos.

Thanks for posting.
