You've probably all been asked this before but I need a dependable, strong reel. I'm also on a budget so... If you had to choose which one to go with. The Daiwa Saltist 30 H-C with 6.1:1 ratio or The Daiwa Lexa 400 H 6.1:1 or HS-P with 7.1:1. Haven't decided on the ratio.
I'll be throwing a little bit of everything. double 10's, 4-6oz. swim baits, Mini D's rubber swim baits. some top water.
Appreciate it.

The saltist will be much more durable, the lexa will be considerably more user friendly. If it is for mostly heavy lures the saltist casting limitations are not that noticable, if you are going to be throwing light stuff I would avoid it.

I agree with hoosierhunter. I have both and the saltist is a more durable reel, but more difficult to cast smaller baits with unless you get it dialed in just right and don't try to over throw it. My lexa 400 h is great for smaller bucktails and topwater or smaller rubber and jerkbaits. I wouldn't use it for blades bigger than 8's personally. The saltist on the other, hand pulls tens fine.

I do have an Okuma Citrix that could handle some of the smaller baits. Still a tough choice. Thanks guys.

I'd go with the saltist 20 over the 30 if you go that route - easier to handle/palm & lighter.

I've got the Lexa 400 PWR-P and the 5.1 gear ratio works well for big blades and I've enjoyed using it for the past year for everything in my box. So far it's held up great and everything inside looks good. Very user-friendly

I would consider which one you do more of. If you throw rubber more often, get the saltiest. If youre a blade junkie, get the lexa 5.1. Either reel will work for both, but IMO the line pickup on the 5 gear lexa is a little slow for rubber and the lack of spool brakes on the saltist makes throwing blades a challenge in difficult conditions without some good thumbwork.

In response to everyone's advice. My main baits will be spinner's and swim baits. I will on occasion throw rubber and when I do they won't be super heavy, probably in the 6-8 oz. size. With all the information I've read, I'm leaning toward the Lexa 400 PWR-P with the 5.1:1. My question would be is the 5 be suitable for swim baits as well.

I have A Lexa 400 PWR on a TI telescopic 9' XH split grip and it is a very very versatile combo.
And economical at around 300-350 bones.
Great starter combo.

The saltist will give you more speed with blades. And if/when you do throw rubber you'll have better line pick up.

How educated is your thumb? I had a Saltist 20. Strong, tough reel. I bought it to primarily use for double 10's. Brought them in fast without killing me too bad, but I didn't always enjoy casting Cowgirls into the wind with it. I fish a lot and very rarely backlash, but I got 'em with this reel. I started using heavier bucktails like Spanky baits, and that helped, but it wasn't what I always wanted to use, and I'd still backlash more often than I would with another reel.

Going with the wind or throwing rubber - no problems at all. Trying to throw into a stiff wind with light baits had me swearing some days though. I'll be replacing it with a reel that has spool brakes.

I also was aware of the extra weight of the Saltist. I wouldn't say it wore me out, but I really noticed a weight difference picking up a rod that had the Saltist mounted vs a Revo Toro NACL.

Have you considered a Revo Toro S? Similar price to the Lexa or Saltist, at a speed that's right between the two (29" line pickup), and much smaller and lighter than either the Lexa or Saltist. It might make for a good all around reel for you in a smaller package.

I agree with the previous post. High speed Lexa's are great for throwing rubber and jerkbaits of any size but are a pain with tens.

Again, thanks to all of you for the advice, and I'll take a look at the Revo Toro S. I've read up on and looked at so many different reels my mind is jelly.
