Whats your favorite items u have hand-made or modified. Im currently working on a seat pedistal trolling setup. Next thinking about a plexi tackle box.

I don't have one handy and it's -11 outside.

It's just made out of rain gutter held together with liquid nails. Dremmel in some hook hanging spots and you're good to go.

1. Homemade 2-piece trolling mast that fits in front pedestal socket & a pair of Bay of Quinte dual planer boards.

2. Also adapted an all aluminum dual downrigger setup that mounts to the side rails right behind the seats..takes 5 minutes to install/remove. Also has third center rod holder for prop wash rod.

3. Saltwater outrigger releases on both corners to hold two lines at rear deck level & limit amount line out needed to get the depths I want - auto hookset when they pop!

This is on a 1985 Skeeter SF150 17'6" bass boat. I get lots of wtf look's.....

Have fun!

I have bought a couple of those sunglass spinning displays that free stand in places like drugstores or gas stations,,,and I use them to hang lures on at home,,easy to get at and find them when needed.

lol, well... There was a guy down the street throwing out an old storm window. I saw it and thought "Hey. You know, I might need that plexiglass one day!" Most of it went to drawer liners for my tool cabinets, and the rest became tackle storage.

It takes some practice learning to cut the plexi - I broke more than a few pieces. Then I got smart and bought the right blade.

You can glue it with 5 min epoxy, but it will come apart if exposed to any force. Acetone is much better, as it actually melts the plastic. I used a couple 2x2's clamped together to keep everything at right angles while the glue dried. It was going to be a tackle box, but it now lives in my fishing room as a place to store the stuff that doesn't fit anywhere else.

If I was going to build another one, I'd go thicker. It would add weight, but this stuff is too thin IMO. It's great on a table, but not sure it would hold up long in the boat.

I made a box this winter to help organize my front deck. I used plastic down spout tubes that I got from Fleet Farm and glued them together with PVC cement. I also included spaces for things that I use a lot. (Thermos, Sun Glasses, Head Net, Bug Spray, Camera - hopefully, Peanut butter jar with Band Aids and Antiseptic wipes, Leader Storage Tubes made from PVC pipe). Basically each item only fits in its designates spot so I will always be able to locate them. I measured my Tuffy and the intension is to place this box directly in front of the console. I will still be able to open the center rod locker and also be able to place rods on the deck next to the console pointing to the back. I also purchased 12 Large Plano boxes off Amazon for $21 and have dedicated each box to a particular family of lures. I also drilled drain holes in all the boxes. The 12 boxes all fit well in the back deck extension of my Tuffy so I can lock them all up. My intension is keep my deck as clean and free of lures as I can. As I use a lure I will place it in the down spout tube for easy storage. The box I made has 5 rows and 33 total slots so I should be able to store lures by families in each row (10s, Surface, Jerk, Cranks, etc) The four corners are larger for spinner baits. If I have more than 33 lures out it's probably time to put them away and start over?

I made the box of treated lumber I had, treated the wood with some special treatment for (pre-painting treated wood) and then painted it. I have less than $30 in it so if it works great, if not, oh well.

It was a fun easy project.

Hands down the best item I've made is my lure knocker. It's saved me $$$$$. Looks like I threw it together in 5 minutes because it did. Old lead, a length of wire, a short copper pipe, old dog leash chain and some small diameter rope.

A good retriever is a must if your a troller!
I started trolling in 1995 and it didn't take long (fishing timber filled southern reservoirs) to realize that not one of the store bought lure retrievers I purchased would do an adequate job. At one point I even doubled them up to get some added weight to crash through tree limbs or branches. It soon became apparent that this too wasn't going to work. So with the help of a friend I started building a true heavy duty lure retriever weighing more than 2lbs.

We certainly didn't come up with anything new but did add some features that make it work better, like welded chains so fishing line won't get caught in between the links, also a large hook at the bottom to grab items like anchor ropes, cribs, navigational weights, gill nets, always love those... etc. We also designed it for the chains to breakaway if something really heavy gets hooked such as an underwater cable, it happens, boats, snowmobiles etc. you never know... 20 years now and literally thousands of lures have been retrieved to run another day and a bunch of other crap to go along with it...

My favorite is modifying unweighted wooden Suicks to get them to run/dive/move erratically by placing weight in unusual places.

Would love to know more about what you've learned from weighting them in different places and how they run afterwards. Pictures would be great too if convenient.

btfish - I see you have one of the Planos marked spinner baits. Have you figured out a way to organize spinner baits within a plano or are they just in there without separators - loose and bulk (and tangled)?

What I've done is to make a cut in the channel dividers to keep the spinner bait shafts locked down. They can be easily stacked two high so you can fit a pretty good amount of baits in that way.

Would you consider sharing a pic? Are we talking big spinner baits, like Ace Tandems, bigger Grinders, that sort of thing?

I have done the same thing as Bigbite, it's not perfect but it works better than just tossing them in a box.

I will work on a picture today

Propster:
I don't have access to my 3700 size boxes right now, but I have a smaller version that I can show you what I was trying to describe. I'm not antiquated with the size of the baits mentioned because I make my own. It's a simple matter of cutting slots in the dividers
(see photos ). You can lay some in the slots so they are facing opposite directions and stack them 2 or 3 high.

I made a fly line stripping basket from a seat post and a trash can. I've got pics somewhere I'll see if I can dig up if anyone cares.

I use a plano box that has no dividers and put my spinner baits in ziploc baggies.
