How many jerseys and buffs should you have on board? Is it proper to wear them in an aluminum boat?

I have about 20 musky rod and reel combos, but these four join me every trip and pretty much cover most things thrown:

7'6" MH for Jerkbaits and Topwater
9' XH for Crankbaits & Swimbaits
10'3" XH for Bucktails
10'3" XXH for Big Rubber

There are a lot of guys who just use one rod for everything, but you coming from a bass background (like I did) will find that odd. Reaching down and grabbing a whole new set-up tuned to that lure is what you are used to and what I really prefer as well.

Yep. Not that changing lures takes a great amount of time, but I find most often that when I switch lures it's only for a handful of casts, covering one spot, and then right back to what I was throwing before.

And a throwback is a must.

A little late since you've bought it already but...
the 7:1 gear ratio has pretty limited applications in the musky world because of the large amount of torque required to bring in many musky baits.
This torque puts a lot of strain on gears and 7:1 reels won't last long when used for most musky presentations.
Most guys stick to 6.3:1 as far as multi-use high speed reels go

HMMMmm Interesting. The 7:1 is on backorder, maybe I can get that changed, idf not I suppose I could just regear it. Thanks for the tip!

And again, thanks to all for thier insight. Looks like I need to get a couple new jersys and Buffs though

If I had to choose one rod & reel -> 6'6" Gloomis Jerk Bait rod w/ Shimano Currado 200- 65 lb powerpro, 80 lb HiSeas fluoro leader, it gets the job done!

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/product/index/shimano-curado-baitcas...

Oh yeah- its not a Muskie reel - please define muskie reel? - I've been using Currado 200's since ~ 1995. Yes, throwing big muskie baits too! I do have others, but keep picking up this combo!

Have fun!

I keep 5 combos on the boat but only have 2 out on the deck at one time. The 2 I keep out most of the time are a 9ft xhvy with Toro Beast. This is all purpose bucktail and rubber setup. The other setup is a 8.5 stc longranger with calcutta D for top water and smaller bucktails. Rods that I have on boat but in the locker ... 1 combo for burning bucktails, 1 custom combo for Wt

Most times it's 5. One big rod, one medium rod, a jerkbait rod and two trolling rods. Sometimes it's 6 if I bring my spinning rod for jigging.

As reflected by the wide range of opinions on this issue, it is really a matter of personal preference. I like to travel light and am often fishing from a very small boat or a canoe. I carry two musky rods, one for crank baits and the other for jerk baits. If I am really thinking, I have a good throwback bait on the rod I am not using.

Most of the time we are using snaps at the end of a leader, which makes changing a bait much faster than having to tie something new on, as is the case when bass fishing.
