Posts: 1937 Location: Black Creek, WI | I think you also need to ask what percentage of your time is spent fishing with bucktails.

Location: Eastern Ontario | I'm no expert and I was going to say none but remembered I did catch one fish this year on a bucktail. Normally I throw Rob Dey spinnerbaits. I have one I named Joe after my friend Joe who doesn't have any hair left either. If I'm casting I'm generally throwing a suick in the slop Edited by horsehunter 11/16/2015 11:40 AM

Location: Contrarian Island | 75% or more but as JLong pointed out they are also in the water the most... I get a kick out of guides that promote a certain bait saying something like "we caught all our fish on XYZ lure the last 3 days" but fail to mention that is all they threw the last 3 days!

Posts: 1283 | I would say 80% but top water and rubber also catch fish for me. I just dont use them as much.

Posts: 397 Location: Wisconsin | Maybe 20-25 percent. I use a lot of baits all season long. Suicks, top water and rubber landed most fish this year, followed by bucktails

Posts: 1969 | Low percentage vs most years for my boat this year.. 14 out of 76 in my boat ... most years I'd say 40%. Honestly hrs thrown bucktails were my least productive bait this year, don't get stuck in a rut!

Posts: 750 Location: Minneapolis, MN | As mentioned, it's all about how often you throw them. My first musky 3 years ago came on a bucktail and I haven’t caught one on a bucktail since then, but I also only throw a bucktail maybe 5-10% of the time.

Posts: 20178 Location: oswego, il | I don't throw bucktails very much. Kinda funny because I make them. I know they work but I get bored with them. I like throwing baits that have a pause and require me to work them. I will throw bucktails when I really have to.

Posts: 32784 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | About 30%. I throw spinnerbaits quite a bit, so that's about 30%. The rest are Creatures, Suicks/Wabulls, and a variety of topwaters. My first 13 over 50, all Wisco fish, came on jigs and creatures. My biggest to date, out of Canadian waters, was a bucktail fish.

Posts: 1198 Location: Walker, MN | 44% for me, I throw them ~50% of the time. My jerkbaits, twitchbaits and rubber are wet the rest of the time. I get my best hooking percentage on bucktails though, far more swing and misses on gliders and rubber. My bigger fish are split evenly between jerkbaits/bucktails/rubber.

Posts: 815 Location: Waukee, IA | I don't even want to talk about how bad my season of fishing in Iowa was. I split time between baits for HUNDREDS of hours and got skunked (so far.) On LOTW bucktails just slayed fish in early July. 90%

Posts: 1660 Location: central Wisconsin | I've got Dasons and Cowgirls that have never been bit, lots of them. I rarely throw bucktails, but do have a good ratio of fish to time spent when I do. Biggest fish on a bucktail for me was on a Mepps Giant Lusox. I haven't thrown those in many years. I enjoy throwing cranks, gliders, and jerk baits more than a straight retrieve bucktail.

Posts: 88 | Someone in my boat is throwing bucktails about 90-95% of the time. A lot of times both of us are throwing bucktails. Otherwise it's cranks like a slammer, or a mag dawg

Location: Contrarian Island | of the 10 over 50 in the boat this year, 7 were on double blades... hard to argue with all the 50+ fish caught each year on them all over musky land to not have them going a lot of the time... musky crack! Edited by BNelson 11/17/2015 8:59 AM

Posts: 1209 | My 70% is based off of 50% of the time throwing them. The normally good hookup rate helps this. I missed 5 on buck tails boat side. Those misses cost it 40% on this pole. Now to other baits that fought fish being fist on rubber oodles of followers. And jerkbaits that landed 4. But also missed more than 4. But those misses and lost fish are arguably due to that type of lure in my mind. So to each his own. 8 days into the water in MN I had 7 fish all on blades. Only throwing blades 35% of the time. I noticed that and forced myself to use them more but I feel like my timing got off cause the season pretty much took a pause till I lost 4 in a rowin a day. Darn MN skies hit or miss for me but I did do good for average size about 44" and one were calling 49.5 because we weren't ready to stretch his tail out to call him a 50. Good season on blades.

Posts: 251 | I would say about 80% of the fish on our LOTW trips come on Bucktails while they were used about about 60% of the time.

Posts: 1220 | I think there just might be a little hesitation to admit how much of the time you toss bladed baits. Sort of like admitting you are not all that talented to work gliders, strong enough to pull rubber, steely nerved to toss top-water, or generally well versed in a lot of technique. It's a low-imagination bait, toss it out-wind it back. Surely, you are someone better than that. Me, I do it the majority of the time....no pride, but I get a fish here and there!

Posts: 20 Location: West Virginia | Another interesting question would be type of water vs bait. For example, here in WV, most of our fish are in smaller creeks and rivers. In most of these tight quarters, it is harder to throw the bigger baits, so I tend to use bucktails more often than I ever have in lakes.
