Arrival night was pretty much a bust due to rough weather and lightning, but I heard the Pizza at the mapping party was excellent!

Sue and I got in late this morning from covering the 'Pay it Forward' Veterans Fishing event out of Baudette MN on Lake of the Woods that wrapped up at 8:30 Am today, moved into the cabin, had a great conversation with the folks at Spring Bay, and launched the boat. Only fished for a while, and the driving cold rain (still making a lot of noise outside) had Sue sitting in her seat looking less than comfortable and looking at the gills in the livewell like they were already cooked, so we went in, hung up the soaked gear, and had a fresh fish dinner.

The weather today was easy to describe...nasty. Big winds and lots of rain, but the MuskieFIRST crew was on the water despite the bad conditions. There was at least one fish caught by Mickey Allen, a 38 caught this morning, and a couple came unpinned.

As the rain stops tomorrow and everyone sticks their head out of the cabin to check and see if their hat/toupee flies off, we'll get a report. It's not supposed to be a nice day tomorrow either, hitting only 54 for a high.

Spring Bay Steve tells me we have over 50 prizes to give away this week, and the hospitality will again be off the charts. Watch this thread for more reports!

There's some big bass in this puddle.

I had what looked like a monster hit a topwater out on the V early one morning, but with the stiffness of my muskie rod she threw it in short order. We got into some nice smallmouth action there back in early June. Not quite the thrill of boating a muskie, but still a whole lot of fun.

The fish have been cooperating. The lake was HOT last night after dark, with fish reported from all over the lake up to 55".

Our group topped out with a personal best 53'!

The Spring Bay 2015 Summer Outing was a complete success in every aspect. Yes, the weather was challenging, but we had several outdoor get-togethers, dockside seminars (incredible exchange of information), and more, and everything went as planned including the Worrall cabin fish fry which was moved to the commons and two production fryers (thanks to Joe and Steve). Sue's and my limit of bluegills, crappies, and LMB disappeared pretty quickly, and the side dishes everyone brought destroyed my diet for the day (OK, really, for the week). Now I have to work hard next week just to get back to where I was with the 'incredible shrinking old fart' program. Thank goodness for the uphill walk from the boats to the cabin. We refused a golf cart just to try to stay even.

Fishing was good, but touchy due to a continued cold snap that plummeted water temps and offered some weird winds. Seems like the cool weather moved the muskies shallower for some.

Tracker was up shooting video and stills for 2016 from a GIANT pontoon that did 62 mph, and Garmin had a crazy yellow flashing lighted rig out surveying the lake. Made for interesting backdrops sometimes.

There were some tremendous fish boated on the lake during the outing, and our crew did pretty well. Since Sue can't fish muskies anymore and I had to work several hours a day, we did a bunch of multi-specie fishing when we could, and had a great trip.

The Spring Bay crew's hospitality was, as usual, absolutely stellar, and it was good to see our MuskieFIRST friends again. The dock attendants rocked. The steak fry rocked. If you missed this trip because you are hesitant, it's a great value, a better time with a very relaxing and fun group of folks with whom to be in camp with a week, and there was rarely a dull moment. I really was a bit depressed when the week came to an end.

And the crappie fishing was absolutely world class. Sue and I boated a dozen over 15" in 4 days out of over 150 over 10", and I got one, my PB North Country black crappie, that was 16.25". We lost count of the total over 12" and never touched any live bait.

I watched and photographed a 50.5 get boated by Sorgy by absolute random chance, and am looking forward to hitting the muskies hard at the Fall outing.

Sue and I truly appreciate the hospitality extended by the good folks at Spring Bay, and the friendship of the entire MuskieFIRST crew. You are all truly class acts....all the way, including the kids. Just need to watch out for that electric John Deere....

Thanks to Spring Bay, Tooth Tamer, Suick Lures and Naze Baits for helping us ensure pretty much everyone went home with a nice door prize. It will take me a while to edit all the videos and images, so this report will be around a couple more days.

See you all next year!
