It's August 17th. Big cold front just rolled through. Is this the kickoff to the fall bananza or will the fish become very negative? (Minneapolis)

Thanks!

Water temps were 68 here, then up to 74 in a few hot days and now will be back to around 68 again. Perfect!

I actually think that major warm-up we had last week screwed things up, and the return of cool weather is going to get them going again.

At least that's what I'm telling myself, as I'm going out tomorrow!

I've been wrong before (BELIEVE ME!) but I don't think this will be the big fall cool down that gets fish going nutty in the shallows. It's supposed to warm back up for the weekend, and who knows what after that. I think this is just a later summer cold front, and won't be the consistent water temp dropping weather that really kicks things into high gear. I've never really seen the awesome shallow water bite thing happen till at least late August.

On the other hand I don't think the front will really hurt, and it will be nice to have the water drop down a few degrees as it was nipping at 80 on a couple deep cisco waters this last weekend in Hayward.

While this initial cool down is most welcome, I don't think we should put away our flip flops and fishing thongs just yet.

Ciscoes are spawning here in Illinois as we speak, guys are lined up at the ramps with their permanent ice shacks waiting for first ice. If your not fishing deep humps right now you are not presenting a lure to a fish.

Nope, but we did split winter into three seasons that have nothing to do with the calendar or earth's axis angle relative to the sun's rays.

Cool front rolling through here in the next couple of days, but we're still atleast a month away from Fall fishing here in Missouri. On a side note, I was at the lake yesterday and it sure seemed like it was already turning over.

Not quite yet. This is more the type of front that puts everything to the bottom of the lake and completely uninterested in anything you put in front of them. Don't get me wrong, I'll be mowing my lawn in a few so I can get some time on the water tomorrow. My expectations are not all that high though. I'm with curlytail and am just going to be happy to have releasable (yeah I just made that up) water again.

Nice report ToddM..... Perfectly logical reactions to Dog Day's of August cold front's for FIBS!

Turn over? Real cold front fishing....Maybe try late November in Presque Isle.... break out those big suckers! Or, like 2lb Bull Dawg's....etc. Carry 50lb bags of sand in truck or kitty litter for extra traction on the launch ramps to both launch and take out, and also have Ice Spud handy to open the launch up!

Fish NW Ontario in late Sept or early Oct for really good big fish cold front's, bring shovels, etc. just in case!.

Have fun!

Todd, whites are good until labor day. After that though, it would be silly.

Your ok EA. With age, they should now resemble mossy oak breakup. I would suggest buying a can of scentblocker before the fall hunt..

I kept the tighty whities. They look more like a koi than they do white.

I'd definitely say just another summer cold front. Last week when the water cooled down the fish responded well, not so much last night. I spent a good portion of yesterday afternoon after suspended fish and I marked more in 6 hours than I have all year, managed to hook 1....not very good odds considering my graph was going crazy. Casted for another 6 hours and never moved a fish. Water Temps didn't drop nearly as much as last week...74 compared to 69.

Picked up a 41 and saw another smaller fish in less than 5 feet yesterday. 2 hrs of fishing, at moonset.

Got a 35 and a 48 yesterday. A 46 Sunday and a 38 Friday. The heat into the cold front have definitely not hurt the bite! I don't think it's fall yet, just a good late summer cold front.

If you ask me, the weather yesterday was about as good as a guy can ask for. Except today might be even better.

What are the current sucker prices? Are they waiting in line for them? Shortage again?
Can I use food stamps to buy suckers?
