Hey guys, decided to repaint one of my brand new never used plastic lures (11" magshad) with my airbrush using testor enamel paints. Everything looked great after painting and I allowed 36 hrs for the paint to cure.

Was not sure what I was going to clear coat the bait with (should have used 2 part epoxy I guess) and just grabbed a can of Testor spray lacquir from a hobby shop. Sprayed a nice coat and put in on my spinner. 1hr later I came out to check on my bait and the nase of the bait has cracked where the lip mates into the body.

Anyone ever experienced this?

Trying load pics.... but it's not working for me

What cracked? The bait itself ? or the paint and or clear coat?

The bait broke. The lip and first hook ring is 3" apart. There is a major fracture in the bait and the lip fell off.

that doesn't look like paint damage or anything that sealant will do to me.

looks like it suffered trauma at some point in its life. definitely not from the paint or top coat. Ive used Testors enamel and lacquer on wood baits without issue.

Doesn't look like anything paint would do, even a solvent based paint. Any chance you have kids near your workshop? That looks like something I would have done when I was a kid and "forgot" to tell my dad. lol

At this point the only thing I can think that could have caused this may have been the bait is fairly heavy and being rigged turning horizontal rather than vertical. That or if the lacquer when curing expanded between the lip and the body popped it.

I wish I could blame it on my kids but they were not home at the time.

The bait was quite literally perfect before clear coat and I don't beleive it ever touched the water.

I’d guess it was cracked before you painted it.  Maybe physically damaged somehow or maybe too much regrind used when molding, or maybe the molding process was out and a knit line didn’t properly meld together and stress cracked it.  The paint process you did would not or should not cause that.  There was likely a hairline crack before you started.  The lacquer shrinks when drying and could have pulled the crack apart.

You could try gluing it back together, but I'd be leery with that bait
