I have been experimenting with different sealers and finish. For sealing the blanks I have tried a polyurethane (didn't work well and took on water eventually). I then switched to tung oil which seems to be better than the previous but it doesn't soak in as well as the ploy?

For finish I have only used devcon 2 ton which seemed very brittle and glass like once it's set. The devcon easily cracked and spidered around the screw eyes. I'm probably going to go the envirotex route but wanted to get som opinions on what else was out there that may be better than e-Tex for lure finishing.

My baits are primarily made from white cedar if that affects which products should be used for that wood type? Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time!

I have only made a couple dozen baits but have used devcon and envirotex and will use only envirotex from now on. Very very nice finish easier to use than devcon and holds up very well.

I finish my glides with multiple coats of etex, and my jerks with etex spray.

Kingfish,

I agree with the etex as your finished clear coat. Takes some time to mix right but it's worth it. No one replied to the sealing blank question. I use a 60/40 mix of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. You have to dip them in a coffee can and then let them drip dry. I let them dry out for a week before I prime. I started out building saltwater baits for stripers and bluefish in the surf. They hold up for years and take a lot of abuse hitting rock jettys and bluefish teeth!

Seal with E-Tex thinned with denatured alcohol, then a second coat w/o thinning. Paint, followed by more E-Tex. It's a slow process but it has proven to be very durable.

Since I use cedar I don't worry about sealing anymore. I finish with Envirotex 2 coats and it holds up well. I am going to try some KBS Diamond on some resin lures I am starting to make.

Is anyone using any spray clears or anything of that sorts over paint? I know it's now the most durable but a thrashed lure looks great in the man cave also. I've started building some baits and have noticed even some big builders don't even use epoxy. I don't have a spinning drying rack yet but can really thin coats of epoxy be hung up or is that not even a option?

I've been using zinsser sanding sealer, but was going to try denatured alcohol and etex. Sounds like denatured alcohol shouldn't be used in your basement with the fumes and vapors?

I played around with KBS and it is pretty good stuff but the fumes are VERY bad for you, take extra precautions with it.
