| If someone was just starting out- what are 5-10 baits you would recommend every angler has? Sizes and color patterns appreciated as well.
So far I have:
-Magnum Musky Killer Orange/Black
-Super Shad Rap (Custom Sunfish)
-Little Ernie (Custom Baby Bass)
I'm looking to add 3 or 4 more before my trip in August. 2-3 spinners/bucktails and a hardbait or two. |

| "double 8s and 10s" refers to blade sizes on bucktails. "Double" means two blades in line.
If I could only have 5 baits I would have:
one double 8 bladed bucktail
one double 10 bladed bucktail (I prefer the musky mayhem cowgirls for bucktails)
one mid-sized (like 8") walk-the-dog topwater (like a Weagle or a Big Mamma)
one 7.5" Phantom (soft tail or not) or another similar glide bait
one magnum-sized bull dawg
I'm not totally sold on any particular colors for certain baits, but for bucktails I have the most confidence in chartreuse blades and silver blades with any color skirts.
That lineup is all about casting. No trolling baits included.
For the amount of time that I've thrown crank/twitch baits, they haven't held their own for catching fish. So I wouldn't even have a crankbait IF I could only have 5 baits. |

Yeah, but where's the fun in that?  I agree baits are tools, and I probably wind up using 6-10 baits on a trip. But I love collecting via going to shows, etc. It's part of musky fishing, as far as I'm concerned. I used to get more than I needed, then I stopped...now the last few years Ive gone nuts on baits again. It's fun. |

This is a great list. I would make the following tweaks/recommendations:
1.)either the Dbl 8 or the Dbl 10...put orange blades on one of them. Doesn't make a ton of sense to have two of the same color with only difference in size. Big fish will eat 8's or 10s, so get one set of painted blades and one metal finish.
2.)DDD - I can go one step further with the "flash" recommendation (which I also endorse) and make a specific recommendation...get the Holo Tulibee.
3.)Depth Raider - Interesting with the orange belly. Have had success with that for sure, but just as much success with the white belly perch (guides choice exclusive), Miller Perch, & Firetiger. I think the moral of the story here is get something "perch'y", and how hot one goes on the color scale probably should be a reflection of water clarity of the lakes being fished.
4.)Grandma - possibly my favorite lure. Don't overlook the Holo Musky or Holo Tenn Shad
5.)I'd personally pick either the medusa or the bulldog, not both. In lieu of one, I'd add the Phantom Hardhead. Probably one of the most versatile baits out there from a color, action, and depth standpoint. Add weights in different spots to get different action. Swap out tail colors and styles (phantom has 4 tail styles now). Heck, i've even taken the weights off and used it as a topwater over weeds, and let it flutter into the pockets. |

my point on the duplication of rubber (two selections) is that i see a pounder and a medusa as totally different tools ... in the "magnum" size the medusa outfishes bulldogs for me and the pounder is just a fall/late fall/big-fish locale must.
there are (2) baits i left off that could or should be on the list:
- shallow invader - natural pike (fixed of course so the hooks don't tangle)

| no there are already too many using the bondy... keep that off your list for Newbie's! In all seriousness an original bondy is a great tool! Another you sould have on the list is a spinnerbait, grinding weeds is deadly....an another is a Bobbie or Suick (probably both)..and another is...Oh I see now why most of us have several 100 baits |

Yeah, I know. I struggled with which one to cut. If one feels that strongly about the Medussa, then I'd swap out the Pounder Bulldog for the Magnum/Pounder Hardhead under the pretense that the Mag Hardhead can absolutely serve the same function as the Pounder Dog in your scenario. Just my opinion.
Or we could make your list 11 baits.  |

| Lots of good lists on here. Your body of waters will tell you what you need. Lots of good baits on the market, but you will over time find what YOU have most confidence in.
Bucktail- My wife and i fish Spanky dbl 8's
Deep crankbait- Depthraider or Ernie
Glider - Hellhound or Hot Tail
Spinnerbait - either safety pin or grinder style
Tail bait- I really like Lac Seul Turr-bo, but Topraiders work too.
WTD topwater- 8" weagle or Jackpot
Shallow crankbait- too many good ones to list. I prefer the harder shake of a Crane, Jake or Slammer over a Grandma

| Here are a few of my go to baits, I might have a few colors/back-ups of each though.
1. Bucktails: double 10's and/or my favorite the Dadson 9mm. Good luck finding them. A couple smaller sizes or single blades. I spend 80% of my time with bucktails on.
2. suick: I would go with the 10" weighted, I am going to try the 10" HI this year and I have high hopes for it.
3. Believers: 10" both jointed for casting and non-jointed for trolling.
4. Super Shad Rap: I think these are very good versatile lures.
5. A topwater: my choice is a prop bait like a top raider.
6. Rubber: Super D or bulldog.

| 1. Dive & rise jerk bait. Perch or F/Tiger 8-10 in
2 Sledge Jerk bait 9 in. weighted ( I prefer the Randy Shutt originals)
3. There are always a local favorite Basement Baits that work well both jerks & cranks. One of each.
4. Grinder style spinner baits. One painted blades & one silver and black.
5 One double 8 painted blades & one silver and what ever the local favorite color
6. Ask around before you buy anything. Local lakes always have go to lures that work well. There is no sense in spending limited resources on "TOYS" that do not have the reputation to back them up on the water you fish. You can add more later as your knowledge and ability increases. Remember You may need Specialized rods/reels to handle some baits.

| Learning to constantly be aware of things around you on the water and on your graph will put more fish in the boat for you than any hot lure ever could. Don't spend alot on tackle, buy a good graph and learn how to use it well. |
