Anyone having luck in mn? Particularly the metro.
I have been on waconia a number of times with very little to show for it. Had one on a week ago but came unhooked. Was in a cabbage patch in about 9 fow.
Not looking for any specifics but general info is welcome. Need some inspiration that they are biting somewhere lol.

Fishing Tonka so far this season. Saw first 40" last night during the minor moon period and that was it for the night. Muskies don't seem to be in past spots, or our timing is off. Very little to show for many hours on the water. I am hearing it has been tough for everyone.

Judging by the 312 views with only one post I am guessing it has been tough for most guys.

I am 5 muskies for 8 times on the water. My missed days were the day after opener we had 20 lookers no takers. 2 days one was short on two lakes I have never fished. Moved 4 in three hours on one and after a full day on the other I moved 10 with a couple hot followers that I messed up on. And a day with my friend driving and learning how to maneuver. But to save my stats I have had a twofer could have been a 6 fish day With my dad on Father's Day. Have seen upwards of 125 ski and 25-30 were over 52". I am on pace to have a best year ever. Love MN muskies I have a 49-50" two 42" a 44" and a 38" that went around the 8 three times before striking Have had 6 monsters show up to eat a pike on my line. Two have hit one was then hooked and caught.

Dude Fishysam what are you doing out there? Can you give us any guidance as to what is working for you? No need for names/spots/specifics. Any insight into your approach though would be immensely appreciated.

Would probably be the most-viewed post this week lol

Thanks

Ben T

Honestly there has been some luck with timing, that being said I haven't ever been worried with moon phases till very recently. One example from Father's Day- we slowed down from 1-330 pm made a large move. And got to lazy lookers in a 100 yards. 2.5 hours after moving them we went back and I moved 2 and then caught a 42" in ten casts. Stuck my talon down. Took a light cast to clear the line and on my next cast a hot ski wanted it till I touched the boat with my rod. In the next 15 minutes and 100 feet my dad and I moved 15 more fish and I am disappointed in myself for not connecting with a couple more but I was so jacked up seeing them. Blue skies and no wind.

That day single buck tails and spinnerbaits were the deal. Kinda fast.

If your not getting bit by pike your probably not near monsters. 2 years ago I got a 7/0 hook threw my hand and a finger with a pike on the other end so now I don't horse pike in any more but on 7-3-15 boats everywhere I got 9 24" pike and 3 of them moved 52+" ski one of which connected with the pike while I was getting the camera out be went down and I couldn't raise him with out him spitting the pike out. That being said I went to double tens at a good clip and pulled a 38" in main lake basin about 50' off of a main lake break line. I'm guessing he was suspended at the level of the weeds but no longer in the weeds at 4 pm

The 49" I got this year I believe a 18" pike hit my lure and then before I felt it I got hit with the 49". And caught him after he shook the pike out. "Spinnerbaits "

Opening day moved fish in the best cabbage around mostly lazy, and in the dark one hit a double 8's as it broke the surface at the boat. 44"

Sunday of opening weekend I had a pike about get gobbled up in 20' during the opening weekend slower retrieve with little to no blade vibrations seemed better. Example esox research swimming jig had hottest follow.

I Just know what works for me and if anyone has really good boat side ratios I'd enjoy meeting up in hope of learning more and showing what I know. I mostly have the lakes I fish figured out except timing and baits and #*#* everything but structure haha lucky this year! Pm me for mn fishing

^ My thought too. And if he does he certainly has it figured out. Good for you fishy either way that is awesome fishing. At least someone is seeing fish!
On a side note if anyone sees me in a blue pro v with yamaha motor on waconia feel free to say hi. People don't seem to be as social on lakes as they were years ago.

Clearly he found that lake they show on the sonar demo units they display in the stores. Great season indeed.

Has been very slow for me as well this summer. I have been hitting all my normal spots and not moving anything with significant size. Tonka has been very slow so far this year and all the fish that I have seen are small. Burning blades most of the time just to move some fish but haven't had much luck. Hopefully it starts picking up soon. What parts of Tonka do you normally hit?

Has seemed a little slow for me too. Hard to tell though, with a small sample size. Only been out 5 times, two of those for only 3 hours. All trips in the east metro. Only one dink in the net so far, but I seem to be attracting a lot of pike. Multiple pike each trip, and some really nice ones. Couple of weeks ago had 5 pike on 5 different lures. Every time I would change lures, another pike. Only had two nice fish follow, and one about 30'. I've seen a number of fish porpoising nearby, and saw a really nice one last week, while trolling bait balls in the open basin. Fish was about 6 feet from the boat, about a foot down. Just sitting out there doing nothing. Not interested in anything either. I need to spend more time on the water.

Half of the giants I have seen have shown themselves to a 24" pike. Stop wrenching them in and take a look. And no I haven't been on any metro lakes and earlier in the year I have been fishing where the best weeds were, after not seeing anything where my crew has done work last year. That being said last year the pattern was way off of the year prior.

I'm hoping next year there back on one of the three patterns because idk if I'd be able to stray away from three years experience. Doing it this year was hard. I have honestly just thrown out everything I think I knew except boat control. Side note. I know I had success on almost all inside weed lines until Father's Day weekend. Father's Day weekend and on I have been on outside weed lines (deep side)

It's been an above average year for me thus far, but the trolling bite was pretty good early this year on the lakes I was on....not so much last year. Biggest fish so far is a 47" and more sub 40's than normal but you gotta fish through the small fish. Haven't moved very many fish in any one outing but the fish I'm contacting seem to be hungry. Top waters and small bucktails have been my casting producers and 13" Grandmas are always hot for me when trolling. Don't get too amped up about being in a slump. Still plenty of time and a few good days will cheer you up. Good luck out there!

Last two weeks have been the best fishing in last four years,,no monsters but moving them just need to close the deal,,,speed kills how bad do you want it comfort or results.

I figure 10 follows for every taker in the metro is par for the course.
Heres a 34" pike My son caught a week or two ago that a nice lower 50's decided it too wanted. wish it didnt let go. would have made for a better pic.

I to have been catching a lot of pike lately, more than I've caught in recent years. I'm going to have to start bring them in slower and see what follows.

I'd be rather upset if I raised upwards of 125 fish and only boated 5...

I am not upset that it's the 5-125ish ratio. But seeing / moving the fish is helping me learn more faster. As far as my career goes this time of year I would have moved 15 for one in the boat so yes I am excited to see this fall after what should have been 15 fish days. And yes we landed 48"s

What are the water temps at in the Metro? I may head south to fish with some buddies down there this weekend but I don't want to if it's going to be in the 80's.

I have never fished south of Mille Lacs. If anyone would be willing to share some tips on fishing any of the Metro lakes please PM. I'd be happy to exchange for info on lakes up north.

Yesterday surface temps on waconia were at 74. I think all the rain brought the temps down , on the 4th they were right around 78.

I would agree that the rain dropped the surface temp down. I was reading around the same thing up north and on Tonka

Tried tonka today and was able to raise two fish both 40" or less but no bite. Reminder to figure 8 even if you have weeds on your bait. I knew this but for some reason I didn't do it and magically there was a fish just hanging out waiting for his snack.

First week of July was on Independence, had about 8 follows in 6 hours but none of them would commit to swiping at the lure. Even had a few hot follows but still wouldn't open their mouths. Talked to some other folks and they had similar stories.

Sounds like these fish are seeing a lot of lures, change it up, try something unconventional perhaps. Or speed, get a workout and catch a fish all in the same go!

Seven trips out, mostly short outings of 3 - 6 hours, 6 muskies in the boat (3 for me and 3 for partners). Doesn't sound too bad but doesn't feel that good.
