It'll be my first time at the expo. Booked the hotel a week ago and plan on showing up all three days. Will be taking the my 9 year old son with as well. Not sure who's more excited for the festivities between us two. My son just wants to meet Mike Keyes and doesn't quite understand why Jim Saric isn't going to be there (clearly winter television has some influence on the young kids mind).

So I have two questions. Being my first time at the show is there any part of the show that's a must see or cant miss event? Will there be any swap meets that weekend? Also, is there anything that is a must for the kids to attended?

My final question. I am looking to pick up my son a nice rod and reel combo and was wondering if the expo is known for having combo's available or good deals on hand. This is clearly something I wouldn't need to buy at the expo but I would like to surprise my son with one. He had a great year in school and participated in quite a few extra curricular activities, whether that be sports or school related activities. I don't want to sound like I spoil him, but he is super pumped for summer and musky fishing with Dad this summer and last year he used less than stellar equipment and never complained once even though every time he cast on the very old abu it sounded like a dinosaur giving birth or at least what I would imagine one would sound like.

Yes for the swap meet. the swap is at Ogara's (Irish) pub in St. Paul about two miles from the show. Usually starts at five on the Saturday of the show.

There are always good speakers at the show. I always try to hit a few of them when I am there. Didn't make one last year. But I was to busy spending money. But one good thing for your son. Is off to the right once you get into the show, there is a few tables set up for kids to build $25 worth of musky lures to take home for free. It's cool cause it gets the kids to interact with more people, as well as build his own bait that he will catch on musky on with his new killer rod that dad bought him

As far as Combos. I can't think of a specific combo off the top of my head. But I am sure that there will be something that you can get for him at a very decent price. Otherwise wait till the swap. Guys ALWAYS bring rods and reels and some combos as well. Buddy of mine bought a combo last year with an NaCL and predator rod.

Friday, get your reels serviced by the Garcia guys...awesome stuff there! Stop by and make a sweet double, custom showgirl that your kid makes! Nothing better. My 6 year old girl will be making her 4th showtail this year.
Saturday, skip the show early...it's a zoo. Go to Blue Door for the burgers, fries, fried green beans, and better cheese curds than any state fair (get there before 11:30). Back to your hotel to take in the Blue Door coma. After the coma wears off hit the show and then over to O'Gara's. Your kid will clean up at the swap...guys will just give him stuff, including me and my buddy.
Sunday, take in a few speakers and have a safe trip home.

Took my daughter last year. She had a blast. She made baits fished in the trout pond, played in the minnow races. We also got some free lures from some of the bait makers. It was very cool of them. She started collecting. All the business cards. She has been asking when we go back!!

If you want to see some fireworks go to Reed's and pick out a combo and tell them Thorne's has the same one for $100 less.
Good times.

Ahhh Reeds.. always willing to wheel and deal it seems.
Frequently selling for lower than marked and the staff is razor sharp when it comes to arriving at a price point that encourages you to say, "well yeah... I mean, yeah, YES YES YES!!!"

Your son will have tons of stuff to do,,,George Wahl the founder of the MInn expo was ALL about kids. There is Georges tackle shop where kids can make and paint bucktails, minnow baits, jigs with instructors to help. Fishing for life will be there which is a kids org running the trout pond,,,and bring him to the swap meet kids have a way of getting good deals when they ask a guy "how much"

Colin I also sent you a PM

Sounds like a great time. About the swap meet, I definitely have some worthwhile baits that I wouldn't mind bringing in and try to trade off for something else. Is this the purpose of the swap meet or is more of a buy and sell show?

In my five years of attending the swap, I've only made one trade. It's usually buying and selling. Lures anywhere from $5-$20. Good deals for sure.

The expo is the very best place to buy a combo,,Thorne bros,Reeds,Joe's,Blue Ribbon. Will all be competeing with each other and there's always a good combo deal.
Don't buy your kid his combo at the swap meet Kids want a brand new something so he can walk around the show with his brand new shiney treasure.

Unless of course you found the card that morning.
In which case it might still be good.

Tackle Industries will be at the show and have some great deals on rods. Stop by the TI booth and take a look. If nothing else I will give your son a free $15 musky lure to keep him going at the show! My son Austin got a lure from Steve Suick and it just made his day at the Minnesota Musky Epxo years ago. Still has it on top of his dresser unopened.

James

PS-We are also bringing about 500 unpainted Super Cisco lures for the kids to paint so make sure you get your son painting up a lure!!
