I have a half dozen magnum bulldawgs whose tails have been lost or shortened, but are otherwise in fair shape. I have usually just salvaged the hooks and tossed them, but I wonder if they still might be effective. They still look like a baitfish, and the stumps of the tails would still have some action.
Has anybody caught fish using disabled dawgs?

Instead of exploring that possibility why not look at restoring them to their original shape? I believe you should be able to purchase tails separately from Tackle Industries. You could attach them by using heat or an adhesive and you'd have a working lure again.

I say give um a fair go as is. You might be onto something.
If not, you can always say you were on something.

Yes, lots of tails out there. I know Smokeys on the Bay in Green Bay has some plus Tackle Industries has them. Check them out at the bottom of my pages for the Reg, Mag and MegaD lures. $5/6 tails and the usual price is $9.99 for 3.

I have used James's tails to fix mag dawgs, curley sues, and super D's: they work perfect on all of them. My suggestions would be to get the Mega Size replacement tails. I made these years ago (before the "Alpha Dawg" came out) and they have worked very well. And you don't even have to pay $25/each like you would @ Rollie and Helen's.

James,
Will you have any replacement shows with you at the Wausau or MN shows?

Yes, I have about 4-6 bags of each size for next weeks show and will have more for the MN show. LOL I think I have about 300lbs of tails left in my inventory. Long story short, I got these a few years back after a 20,000 lure SuperD production order got in a massive mudslide. Completely covered the bottom 2 stories of the warehouse my lures were in. So, harvested the tails and kept on truckin Mistakes and disasters are not bad if you see the innovation(s) in them....

Using the damaged dawg as a Bondy bait is a great idea Frank. That's a good example of thinking out of the box!

I didn't realize the tails could be purchased. I'll buy some TI tails at the MN show. I probably won't attach all of them right away, I'd like to see what a down-sized version of the magnum can do. Thanks for the input!

This is a great idea. Seen it done and its super easy. Just thread a wire up through the bait under the mid body hook. Just make sure your using a good wire as a harness. you can even secure it to the front line tie as a backup precaution... Joel with Dave's Legacy Guide service in WI http://www.daveslegacy.com/ has shown me a few he has built and had success with. He has some other secrets with this design but you will have to ask him about them He will be at Wausau Musky Expo in the Ross Sporting Goods booth next week if you want to chat with him...

I made my own spare tails from plastisol, quite easy, and then use a blade and a flame to melt the on

I've had plenty of action on Dawgs without tails - as long as it's long enough to still throw out a little thump. You know when people say that on pressured lakes to do something just a little bit different? Sometimes, it's this! Plus, if you think about it, doesn't a stumpy tail Dawg actually have a more realistic profile of a baitfish than one with super long tail? Just a few things to think about I suppose...

I used to do this too. Was real easy to make a mold out of plaster of paris with an old tail. Any hobby store has all you need. Used to pour my own dawgs too and just use the old harnesses. Thats how I came up with my SuperD harness with the coil. Watch out, you might find yourself neck deep in lures someday

Here is how I did mine. Well many others will show you...

Some videos on YouTube too.
