Subject: Best Place for a Musky trip in the US

Hello,

I'm looking to plan a musky fishing trip with my dad and brothers.. They don't musky fish much, so if there is also walleye/northern/panfish there it would be a plus. I love Canada and have been several times, but for one reason or another, we'll need to keep this trip state-side. That said, a cabin/remote/chain of lakes type of location would be preferred. Somewhere that we can cook out on shore somewhere, not see 1000 jet skis, wakesetters, and pontoon boats would be nice.. I'd really like to find a location with decent numbers of fish with the potential for a trophy as well.. Would like the cabin we stay at to at least have running water and electricity.. though not too picky beyond that. We would likely be bringing our own boat, though depending on the size of the group a boat rental may be needed as well. What would you suggest for a body of water, and do you have any specific resorts to suggest? Where in the US have been your favorite/most memorable trips and why? Thanks

The Turtle-Flambeau Flowage in Wisconsin is pretty large and thus can be quite secluded. I never stayed on the lake, but here is a link to info. http://www.turtleflambeauflowage.com/accommodations/

The Turtle Flambeau fits your description. There's a few pontoons around but almost no jet skis or pleasure boaters. Almost all the shoreline is public, there's quite a few places a guy can fix a shore lunch.

dang you're fast, Ken!

The quiet lakes outside of Hayward would work too, 10 MPH speed limits keep the jet skis and wakeboarders away.
Teal Lake Lodge is one I'm familiar with there.

Unfortunately a combination of remote/numbers and trophies are not all that easy to find stateside, hence why many choose to go to Canada.

Since you said you were looking for something on the quieter side with a chain of lakes format I might suggest the Longville area of MN which has quite a few different lakes to choose from. Probably not the best destination for trophies but you are probably going to have to bend a little bit on your top 3 priorities as mentioned previously.

Boy, if you are looking remote, the Turtle Flambeau really fits the bill. I've seen pictures of the water and it is Canada-esque. I've known a few guys who have camped on it and they had a blast. You should seriously look at that place.

One other place to look would be the Cisco Chain of Lakes up in Land-O-Lakes on the Wisconsin/Michigan border. Great chain, not overly developed. Not sure about camping on the chain, though. And if you don't want a lot of other boats around, go before June 15 or so. Less crowded in general up there at that time. That is a really cool chain to boat and fish. Great eyes, muskies, crappies and bass.

The Cisco Chain is great and Bents camp is a wonderful place to stay, the hundred year old lodge with birch bark wall paper is epic. It is not the quietest place though it is a popular watering hole. You can't get more remote than Turtle Flambeau and big fish are abundant. That to me sounds like the place you are looking for. Camping on Vermilion at one of the of the state campsites would be nice too.

Yeah, pretty much every muskie lake in MN is loaded with pleasure boaters and not a lot of shore lunch spots. Most of the land around the lakes is privately owned.

Chautauqua Lake, NY

I didn't realize "remote" was a must....Chautauqua is surrounded by community and lots to do, however if good muskie fishing is top priority; Chautauqua is one of the premier muskie lakes in the world IMO.

Good Luck

You may want to look into renting a house boat for a week. I know there is at lest one House boat rental place on Vermillion Lake, they are located , on Wakemup Narrows , Indian Bay Is. Check out House boats, on Vermillion Lake Minn. Marv.

Totally agree with turtle flambeau. It's beautiful and remote. although it is big water and can be a bit tough to find spots. There are great opportunities for musky and other fish, but I would recommend a guide for at least a day to ease the learning curve. Ben Michlig is a a great guide, hire him for a day and he will put you on fish!

Giant muskies jumping in the boat?? Maybe back in the 40's? The "Chip" is a beautiful body of water. Kdawg

HA! Good one!

You could consider the Chip. Island camping would have a remote feel, but you will encounter other boats pretty regularly as well.

I'm not so sure about the giant jumping muskies, but it obviously has some big fish in it.
