Hey all,
It's rare that a new lure comes along that I get to use before it becomes an old classic. That being said, here's a few notes, tactics and techniques on a lure that was new for 2015 that I've had some success with.

Disclaimer: I'm not a professional Musky guide or someone who sells tackle for a living. I'm like a lot of guys, I fish on weekends and whenever I get the opportunity to jump on the boat and get out there. I'm not telling anyone to run out and buy this particular lure and I don't get anything from anyone for posting this; I just want to share my experiences with the forum.

All that being said,
I purchased a Dyin' Dawg after seeing their online commercial. I did not realize how big it actually was and I (Being from the big is not necessarily better school of Muskie fishermen) figured the only time it might work would be in the fall on the big girls. It then sat in the tackle box for a while.

I tried it out in Early June and I really liked the action on it and the depth it reaches. I fish on a really clear lake that has all the challenges of most clear lakes and it was good to use a lure that I couldn't see all the way from splashdown to the boat.

Flash forward a few weeks, I have a nice 40" Class fish follow a bucktail and a throwback Medussa to the boat and won't bite. Snoot in the air, she gives me the fin as she swims away. I see this big chunk of rubber and hard plastic sitting in it's slot and figure, WTH, that doggone fish hasn't seen one of these before and throw it. First thing I notice is that if you don't stop the reel with your thumb a little early, it'll foul on it's hooks and be a SOB to reel back in. Easily corrected. Coming back onto the 40" class snob's waypoint, I toss the lure and two pulls later it's smoked by the fish that turned it's nose up earlier.

During the ensuing fight, I see the tail of the lure go flying on a surface head shake. Fish in the bag, all's good. I'm now convinced that the lure is NOT too big and I've been throwing it since. I've boated several more fish on it and my PB of 48" Last Friday night at sunset.

A few notes:
Like I mention above, You have to stop it short to avoid fouling.
You may lose the tail. They are easily replaceable and you can order a new one online. Scrape the glue residue from the socket the tail is attached to and use Pro's Soft Bait Glue to reattach it. I haven't lost the replacement tail yet, so it may be a good idea to put a couple of drops on the seam of the original tail.

Tactics and Techniques:
I use this lure in situations similar to where I'd use a Suick, After I've seen a fish follow or strike and miss another faster lure. I also use it to pick apart a break.
I find that reduced boat speed helps keep good action on the lure.
I've used the MI recommended retrieve (short pulls while cranking steadily) but I've had better luck with erratic random pulls including long hard jerks.

Figure 8's - I haven't had a lot of follows on this lure, they seem to either strike it or not for the most part. I try to keep the motion going in the 8 using the same short pulls with a little more line out than on a regular 8.

To sum up,
This is a great lure to add to the arsenal, it's easy to fish and has a great action. Use it after seeing a fish follow something else.
Erratic seems to be better
Keep a backup tail for your favorite color, just in case.
Stop the reel early
Be ready for the hit, they don't nip at this thing, they freight train smash it.

HTH you guys/Gals,

Lumpy,
I'm using 14" 130# Fluorocarbon and I use a glow bead ahead of the swivel because we throw in the evening a lot..

Has anyone used solid wire with these at all? Curious if you can get it to walk side to side a bit with a solid leader. Guess I'll have to pick one up and start playing around.

Lumpy,
The one I repaired now kicks out to the side on pulls for some reason... There are a bunch of cuts on the tail that may have something to do with it, Not sure.

Pics? Sure.. I don't have many of the ones I catch when I'm out on my own (Haven't figured that out yet) Mostly net shots.
I did I little checking on my logs and I've gotten: 1x 33", 1x38", 1x41" and the 48" on the DD in the last couple of weeks. I've also had a bunch of missed strikes, but only a couple of follows.

First is the fish (Notice my Daughter smirking because it didn't beat her 48" From earlier this summer..)

The second pic is the DD after tangling with the 48"

Love the action of the Dyin dawg, i dont theow mine much, i have the same point of view as yiu did on the size. I am saving it for fall though more. I wish they would make a smaller 7" for springtime. I believe it would be killer.

Potomac,
Throw it, I didn't and didn't have faith in it, the fact it doesn't get many follows may lower confidence, but it sure does work. Match the hatch and pick apart your favorite break, I'm willing to bet you get some action on it..

Love the lure! Boated a 49.5" and a 37" in Canada last week with limited use. Both fish were suspended over deep water and hit out on the cast. They also seem to follow this lure on bad fishing days when they won't show on anything. Its a keeper in my box.

Hawg,
I've only had one that hit that I couldn't hook up, it seemed to have hit it from the top front based on the tooth marks...
My only problem has been with it fouling on casts, it needs to be stopped in the air sooner than you'd think.

Hey all,

An update, stuck another one this morning on the Dyin Dawg,
Had a narrow time to fish the last two days (last evening for a couple of hours and this morning for a couple) and I had to tell Mrs. B that I was going up to stain the deck and try out the new 999CI to make sure it wasn't a lemon.
Weather has been steady high 80's with little wind and almost no clouds, so kinda tough.
Last night - Worked two breaks, went through with a Spanky Double 8, nothing moving at all. Went back through with the Dawg, and had something blow up and miss at boat side. Too dark to see what it was...

This morning - two breaks again, royal orba, nothing moving. Came back through with the Dawg, nothing.
Had to wrap things up and get home for doctor's appointments for the kids so I decided to throw one last cast and get moving. Bluebird skies, figured the miskies were giving me the fin once again. Threw it and 20' from the boat, a Muskie flashed up and grabbed it on the rise. Slack was in the line, but the fish just sat there looking at me with the dawg in its mouth while I set on it.
33" in the bag. Not my PB but considering the conditions. I'll take it.
