I am looking to get a small river set up and would like to see what everyone out there is using. I enjoyed the episode that Keyes did from the Golden Hawk Canoe and would like to get a similar rig. Would I be better off going with small aluminum boat? I want something that is somewhat light weight and portable that I can stand up in. If anyone has suggestions or pics of their set ups, I would love to see them.

The Golden Hawks are very nice canoes, but I can't comment on standing up in one. Old Town Discovery square backs would be another good choice. But, if I had to chose, I'd go w/ the Grumman sport boat. You can stand up in those, plus they're tough as nails. Might be a bit pricier new, but well worth it. Plus can take a small outboard & easy to row.

I will have to look more into a Grumman as well. You are the second person that has recommended them to me. I just want to make sure I can throw it in the back of my truck.

A friend is a dedicated river rat & he advised to stay away from aluminum for 1 simple reason. Noise. From moving your feet, scraping a gravel bar, sliding a paddle across the floor. Aluminum is much noisier then 'glass. He has a Golden Hawk & loves it. If you're gonna do it, do it right.

I like the Gheenoes and Towhees but at 100#+ you definitely need a buddy to get it up or down a river bank...or a decent launching point.

I just fixed up this old Lund-Metcraft aluminum ricer. I added stabilizer floats this fall. Works great.

My buddy has a Sportsman's Drifter and it is an outstanding little boat. Two guys can carry or drag it wherever you need to. One guy can drag it without too much trouble.

A few thoughts.....the older Coleman Crawdads are great , I have also used one of the Grumman Canoes and two of us stood up and was fine . And though it hung out the back he put it in the back of a small Tacoma

Also look at Nucanoe for a smaller craft and Golden Hawks are sweet canoes

14ft customized jonny. I take this thing everywhere. Sturdy as heck. Lightweight that it can be pushed off manually from small trailer, doesn't require much of a launch site, and can be easily portaged and dragged thru shallow water when needed. I can also have a buddy fish from back.

Never fished from a small boat like Keyes displays but you can also look into a stand-up kayak or NuCanoe. If I had one of those, I'd be fishing less comfortably, but could end up covering more stream miles than I presently do. Can't win em all.

Thank you. Absolutely never selling this! :D I have more fun fishing with this little guy than anything else.
I am looking to trade my 6 horse for a 9.9 shorty if anyone's interested.

Steve are you fishing from the 10' or 12'9"? I will probably do a lot of fishing on my own from this but will take river trips with my wife as well. Probably won't be musky fishing though.
